Eugene Peete, 44, of Lakewood California, was hit on the head by a small metal can that fell from an aircraft while he weeded his lawn to avoid holiday traffic. The impact caused a two inch gash and minor injuries.
United Press reports five deaths across Iowa during the Fourth of July weekend. Included were two fatal traffic crashes near Mason City and Iowa Falls, a drowning at a sand pit near Bellevue, a fatal motorcycle crash, and a wagon accident near Oxf ord.
The Fourth of July weekend produced 461 violent deaths with 271 traffic fatalities and 152 drownings from Friday 6 p.m. to Sunday midnight. Plane crashes killed three and 53 died in miscellaneous mishaps. fireworks caused one death. Ned H. Dearborn of the National Safety Council called the toll a warning on impatience and fatigue in mass motoring.

Amboy area 24 miles south of Ainsworth hit Sunday afternoon by a wind and rainstorm. Dozens of structures damaged including a barn converted to a corn crib holding 3,700 bushels of corn, sheds, hog shade, grain bins, and multiple trees and windows damaged or blown down. Telephone lines down and driveways blocked hindered report collection.
A lightning strike during a July thunderstorm destroyed the Edward W White farm home south of Ainsworth. The Melo Janecek family occupied the bottom floor of the three story mansion built in 1886 with an observatory. Firefighters from Ainsworth and Washington fought the blaze amid water shortages and saved nearby buildings. The Norton residence also sustained damage but was kept to a minimum.
Thirteen vehicles were registered in the county treasurer’s office during the past week including one truck and one motorcycle. Registrants include Lloyd A. Gray of Washington Plymouth and Hank Taylor of Washington motorcycle, with others from Washington and Wellman and Ainsworth for brands such as Buick Chevrolet Ford Olds Cadillac and De Soto.
Dr Hilton L McRoberts a longtime Columbus Junction veterinarian died after a year long illness. He practiced forty years locally and will be buried at Columbus City Cemetery following funeral services at Central Presbyterian Church. He was born December 10 1884 and survived by two daughters four grandchildren two brothers and three sisters.
John Little, a known Washington figure, has leased the D-X station opposite Tucker Chevrolet and runs it as Little's D-X. The site was previously operated by Mike Lee who recently joined the Washington fire department.

Mrs W L Cole aged 84 died Saturday night in a Sac City hospital after a hip injury from a fall at her home three years earlier. Pioneer Sac City resident, she is survived by four children Guy Cole of Washington R W Cole of Sac City Mrs Bert Gray of Nemaha Iowa and Mrs Louis McCrea of Lake View Iowa plus a sister and five brothers. Funeral services Tuesday at 2 pm at the Sac City Presbyterian church with neighbor Walter Jarrard assisting the family.
Dr J D Hullinger, a Clinton physician of 62 years and over 3,000 deliveries, said he and his 22 year old wife expect a child in about a week and he will handle the delivery at home despite his age. He added he was not born in a hospital and plans a large family.
Rev. S. E. Susie, assistant pastor here, is transferred to St. Irenaeus in Clinton Iowa effective Thursday July 9. Rev. R. J. Ruppenkamp will succeed her at St. James parish in Washington. Rev. Ruppenkamp, formerly of St. Joseph's East Pleasant Plain, is assigned as Susie’s successor.
Grade school and junior high boys are invited to join a YMCA sponsored trip to Cedar Rapids. Register at the Y desk before Thursday noon. Highlights include a zoo visit and a tour of the Quaker Oats plant. Friday travelers bring a sack lunch to eat in the Cedar Rapids park. Transportation costs 25 cents.

Leo Marie of the Washington Knights of Columbus council has been named district deputy for four councils Washington Harper Williamsburg and Iowa City by Hart state deputy Davenport. This marks the council’s first district deputy in 34 years and Ma r ie will oversee over 10 000 members with his first act the installation of officers Thursday. He is a past grand master and a farmer at St James parish.
Harry Ramseyer arrives home after a three week journey covering 20 000 air miles through Beirut Palestine Rome Geneva Amsterdam Prestwick and Shannon. He carried a gift of 30 000 baby chicks to the Iranian people from America.
The House Agriculture committee agreed to emergency drought relief loans and subsidized feed and seed totaling 16 million dollars with potential future funds. Ezra Benson testified that conditions in the Southwest justify urgent credit and aid for cattlemen and farmers. GLENN
A fire at the John Carey residence 444 South Seventh Avenue Saturday at 3 PM damaged the garage and side of the house. A boy nearby warned Carey allowing him to move his car. Firefighters saved the main house but the garage and garden suffered extensive heat damage. Cause remains unknown.
Weather report from Des Moines Iowa shows fair skies tonight with cooler conditions especially in the extreme east. Low temperatures range from mid 40s to mid 80s in the northwest and 60s in other areas, Tuesday will be partly cloudy and slightly warmer with highs in the low to mid range.
