Richmond police mechanics investigated a hissing from a patrol car and were startled when a three foot snake crawled from the upholstery. Ray Carlson recalled he had not removed the snake after taking the car to the garage. The snake had been found on a citizen's complaint.
Wyoming bound 4 H youths plan an eleven day intercounty exchange trip starting July 18 with two chartered buses carrying 50 4 H girls and boys approved by the youth committee 25 girls and 25 boys plus one former member. Reservations of 15 with due date July 3. Orientation July 14 at the Farm Bureau building. Names listed for girls and boys.
The Agriculture Department said it bought 3.621 million pounds of beef this week to steady ruinously low cattle prices caused by the Southwest drought. It outlined a plan to buy up to 200 million pounds more over 20 weeks, providing an outlet for 700,000 to 1,000,000 head of cattle. Secretary Benson indicated further federal price floors would not be pursued.
Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay arrived at London Airport to a hero’s welcome after the first ascent of Mount Everest. Hillary, knighted by Queen Elizabeth II, credited Norgay with planting the Union Jack at the summit. Norgay received the George Medal for gallantry as part of the British expedition that sealed the peak on May 29 near the coronation.
In Seoul President Syngman Rhee reportedly softened opposition to truce terms ahead of talks with Walter Robertson. An informant said negotiations have taken a favorable turn and Rhee will meet again. Rhee issued Fourth of July prayers urging Koreans and the world to pray for peace and an end to Communist aggression.
In the Polish occupied area east of the Oder Niesse, Polish troops and civilians clash with Soviet troops. Reports note Soviet tanks advancing from Berlin, with uprisings in Red Poland and new Nazi style camps in Soviet Berlin. Prisoners are reported slain and refugees describe brutal guards at camps.
United Press reports crowds on roads rail and air for Independence Day. Greyhound Des Moines doubles trips as Rock Island lines see heavier traffic. Fort Madison parade led by 70 year old Charlie Korschgen with flags drums and a 105 year old bicycle. Riverview Park Des Moines hosts open air cowboy show fireworks. American Legion Safe and Sane Independence Day at Drake Stadium. Gov Beardsley to address Wallingford celebration.
The Washington County chapter of the American Red Cross will hold its annual meeting July 15 in the court room of the court house. Nine board members will be elected at this meeting. Members contributing one dollar or more are eligible to attend and vote.
Police chief Carl Hancher says two canines are now at the city pound. One hunting dog was neutered by dragging a chain when captured two days ago. A small black dog is the second. Owners or prospective adopters should call.
Stewart and Crone's All Stars face a Southeast Iowa league game at Greenfield tonight. First pitch is scheduled for 8 p.m.
South Korean troops briefly recaptured Lookout Mountain on the East Central Front but were driven from the crest by a massed Chinese assault within 12 hours. Chinese forces retook the hill, with ROKs pulling to the south slope as fighting continued near Finger Ridge and American advisory officers stayed cautious. U S Navy carrier planes from the Princeton and Philippine Sea bombed frontlines and supply dumps after night B 29 and B 26 raids.
Dr. Frank Haffa a retired Waterloo dentist is free on $50 000 bond after being charged with murdering Arvey Leeper 60 on June 6 County Attorney K L Kober filed a preliminary information in municipal court Haffa testified at an inquest that Leeper threatened him and lunged at him The coroner s jury recommended grand jury investigation to determine whether the act was justifiable The grand jury session was set to begin next Tuesday A friend of Leeper s testified that Mrs Haffa was Leeper s girl friend both Haffa and his wife denied any affair
Washington observes Independence Day as a national day of penance and prayer with two services. The Washington Ministerial Association sponsors a 9 a.m. service in the basement parlors of the Methodist church. The Gideon Society sponsors an 8 p.m. service at the United Presbyterian church. Citizens are invited to attend both services as President Eisenhower urges prayer for the nation’s grave problems.
Kiwanis members heard Robert Everetts discuss the Red Cross Blood Mobile program. The Bloodmobile will arrive in Washington to collect blood from local volunteer donors in the near future.
Chairman Daniel A. Reed of the House Ways and Means Committee warned that extending the excess profits tax and not cutting personal income taxes could trigger a recession. He called the $9.4 billion deficit a sign that high tax policy has diminishing returns. Reed has blocked Eisenhower’s six month extension request and others may push an extension bill next week.
Washington County Rural Young Peoples Group schedules a regular meeting at 7 50 p m in Sunset park. A wiener roast and scavenger hunt will follow. College students home for the summer and high school graduates are especially invited to attend.
Rep John W Heselton of Mass proposes federal control of oil and gas to protect national security and economy. He sits on the House Commerce Committee probing whether price increases stem from industry collusion. He cites reserves, production, inventories, and foreign supplies as context.
Funeral services were held in La Porte City Iowa for Mrs. George F. Pauls 83 a former Washington resident who died June 30 in Englewood Colorado. She lived in Denver since her husband’s 1934 death and is survived by four children two daughters a son and grandchildren.

Sen. Joseph McCarthy defended his chief investigator amid Dem calls to sack him for a charge against Protestant clergy. He rejected the claim clergy form the core of U.S. Communist support and said the investigating panel would not probe clerical subversion. He resisted calls for J. B. Matthews ouster, likely to be voted on next Tuesday.
District Judge Needham heard a suit testing Iowa’s right to require imprinting yellow margarine with the word oleo. Kent Products and Don Skelton seek an injunction to block enforcement of the four imprint requirement, effective July 4, arguing it is discriminatory and costly for small firms.
Officers of Leon Beatty American Legion post will be elected Tuesday evening July 7 at the regular meeting in the Legion rooms at City Hall. All members are urged to be present. Plans are being made for the annual chicken supper and installation of officers July 21.
