A blaze in Cedar Falls heavily damaged the Behrens garage, believed to have started from an explosion in the rear. Damage was estimated at $15,000. Local authorities investigated the cause and secured the scene.
A clinic will be conducted in Estherville on July 22 for crippled children from Emmet, Clay, Palo Alto, Pocahontas and Dickinson counties. Any child 16 or younger may be brought for diagnosis and treatment suggestions. Lillian S. Kerr of the University of Iowa State College children’s hospital arranged the clinic.
Hamburg man Spoons nicknamed Hundred-Mile Sam takes week daily runs between Hamburg and Council Bluffs to serve as crossing flagman at the Burlington railroad Main Street crossing in Council Bluffs.
In Oskaloosa a small dog named Puddles was forced to ride on top of a bus to Omaha after a boy named Bobby and his grandmother boarded. The blazing sun beat down as the dog waited in a box, while Grandmother wished to hold him in her lap but rules prevented it.
Charles Armstrong, 56, parachute jumper, died at the American Legion Fourth of July celebration in Red Oak. He leaped from a balloon at the American Legion park and his parachute failed to open after reaching about 300 feet.
Two pilots and two passengers were injured when two planes collided near the intersection of the runways at Burlington municipal airport during the closing of a two day air show. The aircraft had been lifting off with passengers when the accident occurred.
Eddie Burke, 388, of Spokate Washington, was seriously injured when his car crashed into a telephone pole while avoiding a car and a group of children after an Illinois machine passed him on the wrong side. The incident occurred in Cedar Rapids as Burke attempted to dodge the danger.
Des Moines reports a brother and sister reunited after eight years apart. P. FB Hanson, who left Sweden for America 53 years ago, learned his sister Sophy Ramsey had moved to Des Moines and with police help located her, ending a long family separation.
Elmira New York July 2 Ben Badenoch Jr of West Newton Massachusetts veteran soaring pilot and MIT team member crushed into a hill damaging his glider and breaking both legs He was taken to a hospital where his condition was reported favorable An operator observing the crash radioed for help and a doctor and ambulance arrived promptly The Wilsons received a telegram about the incident.
Carl Mott Keck 69 longtime Washington booster and banker died at the Iowa Sanatorium Nevada Iowa after a long illness. Funeral arrangements are set for 2 30 p m Wednesday at the Methodist church with burial in Elm Grove cemetery. He served on the Washington county hospital board city council and aided road and interurban projects. He was born March 15 1868 in Washington Iowa and survived by his widow a daughter and a son.
Washington business leaders under the Chamber of Commerce plan capacity days starting Thursday July 15. Stores will offer special bargains to draw trade to Washington with a joint promotional effort by the Journal and Chamber circulation. The Journal will publish an extra edition July 13 with ads from cooperating merchants and extended circulation reaching surrounding counties and towns.
The Washington County marriage market shows a strong rise with July pacing past June. By July 6 the year’s licenses reached 70 after six issued on Saturday July 3, marking one of the busiest days in county history. Names linked to late reports include Herbert D. Spring Dorothy M. Irwin of Muscatine and Berna Kane with Mrs Anna Marie Boultinghouse of Rock Island.

Mrs. S. W. Kaster and her son Jimmie visited from Friday until yesterday in Burlington with Mrs. Kaster's parents Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Fristedt. Mr. Kaster drove them to Burlington and yesterday they spent the day with his mother Mrs. Kate Kaster in Mediapolis.
Firecracker noise dominated the holiday weekend in Washington with stores closed and many residents away. Police reported few disturbances and no major auto accidents. A local doctor treated five children for minor burns from explosives and Robert Gray sustained a serious fingertip injury from a held firecracker.
The time has expired for applications for automobile drivers licenses for the next two years and those who have not applied must take drivers tests to qualify as operators of motor vehicles. State examiners are in Washington this morning on their weekly trip and were greeted by a large number.
Pierce Knox, a blind musician formerly from the Washington area now living in Oakland California, arrived in Washington last night to spend a week with relatives and friends. He travels under the National Transcribers Society for the Blind with headquarters at Santa Cruz and has given xylophone concerts in Reno Salt Lake City Boulder and other stops on his way east. His many friends in Washington hope to hear him play again during his visit.
Albert Cherry and James Hotele awarded the painting contract by the board of education will begin work this week on the high school junior high and Lincoln school buildings. The job must be finished by August 10 ahead of September’s new term. At the high school walls ceilings and corridors on the third floor plus room 300 on the top floor will be painted. Exterior painting includes window and door frames. Junior high will receive interior painting and exterior wood and metal work touch ups. Lincoln school work focuses on exterior window and door frames and the fire escape.
Airplanes make Atlantic flight as Pan American Clipper III lands at Foynes after 12 hours 39 minutes from Newfoundland. Caledonia reaches Newfound land in 15 hours 10 minutes amid headwinds. Clipper III commanded by Captain Harold Gray. Caledonia by Captain A S Wilcockson while crews total nine on both flights.
In Ames, Iowa, two Nevada men aged 23 and 22, E. H. Hilleman and H. E. Andrew, were killed when their car swerved off a road near Midvale and rolled into a ditch. Two truck drivers following the car reported the loss of control before it stopped upside down. Both victims died en route or at Mary Greeley hospital. This raises Iowa’s annual auto fatalities to 226.
Sheriff Casey Loss and three state agents sought to identify a man found dead in a barn burned down yesterday on Walter Block's father’s farm. The body’s scars differed from Block’s described marks. Fire cause undetermined with possible foul play, suicide, or accident considered.
Menominee Michigan July 6 A striker was killed when a car struck a picket line of 800 workers at Lloyd Manufacturing. The deceased was identified as Joseph Jozwiak among the protesters. Harold Eismman, the alleged driver, was jailed for questioning after the incident.
Harold S Williams of 913 East Main Street Washington wins a cash prize in a national Kelvin Home missing word contest announced by the Kelvinator Division Nash Kelvinator Corporation. Iowa fared well in the competition and the Detroit event announces the prize.
Shattered hopes rose as the Itasca and Colorado plan air searches southeast of Howland for Amelia Earhart and Captain Noonan. Reports say Earhart may be resting on a reef in the Phoenic group, though earlier signals sparked false hope as flames turned out to be mere meteor flashes.
Early this morning a bread truck driven by Hugh Boyd and a car driven by Forrest McNeil of Crawfordsville collided at East Washington Street near the city limits. The car reportedly ran a stop sign and the truck could not avoid the impact. Both vehicles and a parked car were damaged with no injuries. Two additional minor crashes with no injuries were reported near the town’s east edge and on East Jefferson Street by the high school.
