UN Session Near End As Russia Loses Anti Israel Drive
The UN General Assembly emergency session on the Middle East neared its close after marathon votes. Russia failed to win backing for a resolution branding Israel as aggressor and withdrawing troops, while only a single resolution declaring Jerusalem’s Jordanian sector annexation illegal passed. Israeli Foreign Minister Abba Eban criticized the move as outside the General Assembly’s competence. The session also defeated a Yugoslav Indian draft and a US backed Latin American resolution, both calling for Israeli troop withdrawal.
