Police arrested eight youths after about 50 youths vandalized downtown Des Moines after a dance. Four were charged with unlawful assembly and released on bond, one with intoxication on two counts fined 50 dollars, three ordered to appear in juvenile bureau. An officer was hit by a pop bottle. no serious injuries reported. Ages ranged 15 to 24. incident centered west of Keosauqua Street in a predominantly Negro area.

Laurel Hill Dam in Tennessee continues to leak while officials try to lower Laurel Hill Lake’s level. With 3 billion gallons of water pressing the 75-foot earthen structure, a breach could send a 40-foot wall of water toward the Buffalo River at 30 mph. Officials estimate two more weeks to reach danger level. a few residents remain in the endangered zone and wildlife cops fear heavy wildlife losses in the preserve.

Five killed on Iowa roads over July 4 weekend
United Press International reports at least five deaths on Iowa roads through Friday 6 p.m. marking a 1967 toll of 334. Victims include Steven Douglas Pugh 18 of Melbourne in a head on crash near State Center on U.S. 30 and Des Moines woman in Clarke County after colliding with a truck. Kenneth J. Jordon 71 of Central City died in Linn County collision with Iowa 13. Others were Likie Hartman 40 of New Sharon and Connie Crouch 18 of Gladbrook in separate crashes.

The 75 pound Blarney Stone used as the Dublin Day cornerstone is missing from its place north of the Dublin store. The stone marked with the Robertson family name and 1846 belonged to John D. Trouble in Lake Geneva as youths riot on Fourth
Lake Geneva Wisconsin police faced thousands of teens in a chaotic Fourth of July weekend. More than 100 youths were arrested as crowds pelted police with stones and firecrackers and a National Guard unit was called in to clear the streets. Police said arrests covered disorderly conduct and minor drinking or possession of intoxicants on the street.
