Mayor G. E. Mace of Washington town received an invitation to a White House dinner for the sesquicentennial of Washington D C. Twenty six mayors named Washington from across the United States will attend the July 19 event at the White House.
Jaycees in Washington map a safety campaign at a Monday night dinner meeting. Charles Morgan named campaign manager for a drive aligned with the Drive Right initiative. About 40 to 50 Jaycee members will participate, with Highway Patrolmen Charles Bendlage and Robert Rhinabarger and Sheriff Charles Snyder as guest speakers.
A United Press tally shows 791 people died in accidents during the four day Fourth of July weekend, with 470 in traffic and 159 drownings. Heat prostration, plane crashes, and other mishaps account for the rest as officials warn of a rising national tragedy.
Five people died when a car was hit by a Northwestern freight train at a highway crossing north of Algona Iowa. Victims were Dr William A Howard 74 and his wife Christ August Pofft 45 and Lillian Howard Pofft 44 and their son William Arthur Pofft 20 all from Parkersburg Iowa. Engineer Fred Watson 60 of Eagle Grove said he blew his whistle but the car driver did not hear or see the approaching train.
The city council votes to hold a special election to raise about 16000 dollars for Sunset park improvements via a 144 mill tax. Petition with 425 Washington residents prompted the measure, with notices to appear in the Journal three times.
German and U S forces launch a massive manhunt after Pvt Lon Stephens of Panunipa Texas and Cpl John Vetter of Mowbridge South Dakota escape from a U S air force prison in Fuerstenfeldbruck. Officials say they stole guns and are considered dangerous with orders to shoot on sight.
Bids will be let Thursday morning at Ames for a Wellman street paving project about a mile and for graveling of Highway 1 between Kalone and the county line about two miles. In Johnson county the Highway 1 graveling will extend 14 more miles.
A Tuesday blaze in Brighton's business area destroyed four structures including a feed store, tavern, restaurant, and skating rink. Firefighters from four communities fought the flames for nearly three hours, saving parts of several buildings. the cause remains unknown with speculation about firecrackers unsubstantiated.
Coast guard boats searched Lake Michigan for a navy TBM torpedo bomber with three men aboard after it crashed during a flight from Glenview naval air station to Grosse Ile Michigan. Fog prevented sighting. oil slick and marker papers helped identify the plane. Search paused at night and to resume at dawn. Names pending until survivors ruled out and next of kin notified.
Leon Beatty Post No 29 elected 1951 officers led by Commander Marion Rapp and Harold Boyd as 1st Vice Commander Don Shepherd as 2nd Vice Commander and S W Eas ter as Adjutant. New executive officers are George Baker Charles Hotle and Ray Minick. Officers to be installed July 18 with the annual chicken supper tickets on sale next week in Legion rooms. Delegates to the Sioux City state convention will be chosen at the meeting. Dr H I Masson has moved from University hospital Iowa City to Des Moines Veteran's hospital.
Members of the Washington county Rural Young Peoples organization will meet Thursday evening at 7 o clock in the Legion hall. Movies will be shown by Dr A C Peterson.

Churchill warns of a third world war if Korea falls, Marines brace for Far East deployment, and UN sources say mediation waits until North Korean forces are pushed back past the 38th parallel.
A forthcoming State Department memorandum argues the United Nations would have failed as a peace agency without U S forces aiding South Korea. It says President Truman acted within his commander in chief authority as Congress questioned legality, citing North Korea defiance of UN demands.
Lorin Miller, president of the Iowa association of chiefs of police and peace officers, announced the third annual police pistol shoot will be held at Camp Dodge on July 22. All peace officers eligible for membership are invited to enter, with the event aimed at boosting shooting interest and ensuring regular supervised practice for protection of the public and self defense.
Four Fort Wayne residents died in a Beechcraft crash in La Crosse County near La Crosse Wisconsin. Witnesses reported the plane spun after a wing separated while returning from a fishing trip near Duluth Minnesota.
George H. Williams 63 died Tuesday morning in a Topeka motel while traveling to Colorado for health. Born March 15, 1887, he lived here all his life and worked as a painter. Funeral Thursday afternoon at Jones Funeral Home with Elm Grove Cemetery interment. Survivors include daughter Mrs. Eddie Sehell of Muscatine and brothers Ralph of Washington and Lloyd of Montezuma.
Moscow reports the Soviet Union says the United States must bear the consequences of its aggression in Korea. Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko declares open war is looming, aligning Moscow with North Korea beyond earlier speeches.
The Belgian senate approved the all Catholic government by a 90 to 83 confidence vote, bringing exiled King Leopold III closer to a return. The party aims to repeal the 1945 ban on Leopold and hopes to have him back by Saturday.
A marriage license was issued Monday to Merritt L. Morlan of Russell and Suzanne M. Reif of West Chester. The couple plans the ceremony in the near future and will reside in Russell after the marriage.
North Korean forces launched a frontal assault on the Suwon line and drove a wide flanking movement southeast of Suwon against American and South Korean troops. MacArthur reported initiative on the north and east flanks, with tanks knocked out and North Koreans ferrying troops across the Han river below Seoul as heavy air and naval strikes target Pyongyang, Heaju, and Chinnampox.
Final services for Axel Anderson were held at Sherman’s Funeral Home Tuesday afternoon. Rev. Oscar Moll officiated and burial followed in Elm Grove Cemetery. Casketbearers were A. G. Anderson, O. L. Verwers, R. J. Tanner, W. M. Tweeten, Floyd Murdock, and W. W. Schroeder.
