Pravda reports massive Soviet protests against American Korea policy with slogans like hands off Korea and curb the American aggressors. Page two highlights petitions to ban the atomic bomb and praise of the Soviet Union as a bulwark for peace as non American embassy staff join in anti atomic bomb signatures.
Paris reports Premier Henri Queuille forming a new right of center coalition government promising full cooperation with the United States and Britain on Eastern issues. Observers call the cabinet shaky and likely to fall on a confidence vote as it integrates radical socialists and Catholics while excluding some socialists. Queuille serves as interior minister and premier.
Police held two Toledo men in Cleveland on a theft plot involving a small private airplane stolen from Ft. Madison Iowa. David Ingle and his stepfather Wilson Arterburn were arrested as they exited a Taylor Craft two seater. Investigators say Ingle stole the plans at Ft. Madison last Saturday and flew to Toledo to pick up Arterburn before heading to Cleveland to arrange selling a car to cover debts. They were held for the FBI.
The Iowa Liquor Commission reports a strong fiscal year with an estimated profit of 8 800 000 on sales over 40 million. The figure would top the 1948 record by 470 000 and exceed last year by 390 000. A 6 500 000 transfer to the general fund is planned, including 2 million for cities and towns and 2 million for taxing districts. Inventory dropped by 1 million due to a shift from hard liquors to cheaper wines.
Levy Beatty Post No. 29 of the American Legion will hold its annual election of officers during the regular business meeting July 4 at 8 o'clock. The meeting will be held in the Legion rooms at city hall Commander Ray Minick will preside. Official notice has been sent to all members relative to the election. Refreshments will be served following the meeting.
Chamber secretary Lester Hamil announced most Washington stores will close Tuesday July 4 for the holiday. Some restaurants will remain open at their regular hours.

ChicagoAP Lincoln Park zoo director R Marlin Perkins said giant gorilla Bushman probably never will recover from last month s heart attack. His right hand and leg are partially paralyzed and he spends most of his time lying down in his cage at the zoo.
Chiang Kai-Shek branded Soviet Russia as the aggressor in Korea and urged the United Nations to take formal action. He announced an 80 minute speech given from Formosa and a formal offer to send 38,000 Nationalist troops to enforce UN sanctions.
Eight persons appeared in Mayor G. E. Mace’s police court last week to answer traffic violation charges. Offenders include Wendell Rider and Frank Demaree for speeding with fines of 10 dollars each, Owen White 10 dollars, Lewell Erb for running a stop sign 5 dollars, Paul Bower 10 dollars, Louis Widmer 10 dollars, and James C. Marken for speeding.
Iowa unemployment insurance payments fell to 332 910 in June from May 438 300 and April 512 000. Seventeen thousand nine hundred benefit payments were made in June with an average weekly amount of 18 37 dollars. Daily payments declined from 46 500 in March to 18 500 in June as employment rose aided by construction activity and farm labor demand.
W. P. Steele aged 88, a former Washington resident, died at his Clinton home Saturday. Funeral arrangements were set for Wednesday afternoon near Columbus Junction. Steele had lived in Washington until moving to Clinton about ten years ago.
Washington youths center calls for married couples to volunteer as chaperones during open hours. Interested parties should contact Karl McClure at West End grocery or Mr and Mrs Harold Mangold. The center will host a gathering Tuesday evening July 4 for county youths.
Washington county American National Red Cross appointed new leadership at the annual YMCA meeting. Mrs. Nate Young was elected chapter chairman with Rev. Arthur Peters as vice chairman and Mrs. L. H. Trotter as secretary, while Besse Allen from St. Louis explained relationships to the National Red Cross.
Marsha Bailey of Washington Helen Holmes of Keota and Evelyn Davisson of Wellman recently returned from the national convention of the FHA held in Kansas City Missouri from June 28 to July 2. Over 2 600 delegates from 45 States Hawaii and Puerto Rico attended the assembly. Iowa delegates participated in discussions with Hawaii Wyoming and Oklahoma.

Carol Gesling-Ainsworth won festival queen with 26 845 votes and received 25 dollars. Runner up Peggy Koehler earned 10 dollars while court attendants Mary Ann Havel Lois Gesling and Meda Owens got 5 dollars each. Nicholas, a Republican lieutenant governor nominee, spoke before the crowning.
Iowa officials announce a late summer campaign slogan Two Weeks to Live during the Labor Day weekend to reduce traffic deaths. Officials say over the past three years an average of 26 people died in auto crashes during those weeks and the drive by the Iowa Safety Congress seeks to save a life each day.
A Palisades amusement park shooting gallery operator introduced a new big map of North Korea as a target, drawing a landslide business today and highlighting the novelty during openings.
Axel Anderson 80 died at his home near Washington after a short illness. The funeral is set for Tuesday at 2 pm at Sherman's with Rev. Oscar Moll officiating. burial in Elm Grove cemetery. He was born in Sweden and came to America at 19. Surviving are his wife three sons four daughters two step sons twenty two grandchildren and six great grandchildren. One son Milford preceded him in death.
Washington defense secretary Louis Johnson rejected reports of partial mobilization of reserves this week. A Defense Department spokesman echoed Johnson, saying no call to active duty is contemplated and that voluntary enlistment will maintain authorized strength.
Cedar Lake Indiana 14 year old Ronald Ebert declined a $10 reward for saving another boy from drowning. He said he needed a good swim anyway and asked no recognition for the act.
Three people sustained minor injuries in three separate weekend crashes in the county. Jenner W. Beaulieu of Buffalo was treated for cuts and bruises after his car left the highway and struck the Eldon Bane house in West Chester. damage to Bauer's property noted at 100 dollars. Mrs. Lee Wallace of Brighton sustained head and leg injuries when her husband’s car collided with Clarence V. Garrels of Packwood on a country road near Brighton. Garrels’ car suffered 200 dollars in front-end damage and Wallace’s vehicle was overturned with 350 dollars in damages. Maynard Goff Jr. of Washington suffered a crushed leg when pinned between two cars at Sunset Drive and West Washington street. Rev. William J. Kerrigan of St. Ambrose College backed out, failing to see Goff. Deputy Sheriff Loren D. Robertson investigated all three incidents.
Maj. Gen. William E. Dean, former military governor of Korea, was promoted to lead all U S forces in Korea. At 50, he previously commanded the 44th Infantry Division in World War II, which captured 30,000 prisoners and helped force the surrender of the German 19th Army. Brig. Gen. John H. Church becomes Dean’s senior liaison.
U S and South Korean forces battle to hold Suwon as three North Korean columns push south east of the city. MacArthur reports South Korean lines north of Suwon and reinforcements moving north as U S troops head toward the front for a potential clash on Independence Day.
Iowa State College extension service July 1 report lists corn borer hatch figures by region. Southwest 43-130 with 365 hatched, southeast 45-55 with 95 hatched, central 44-280 with 405 hatched, northwest 29-220 with 115 hatched, northeast 32-95 with 105 hatched.
