Standing by His Sergeant in a Civil War Battery
The account recalls Sergeant Armstrong of battery B, Fourth United States artillery, who refused to abandon his horses and obey orders at a camp, declaring he acted by command of John Gibbon. Gibbon backed him, and Armstrong remained in the barn with his men, defying officers who sought to use the space for horses. The narrative shifts to British appointee William Cunningham, New York provost marshal, whose brutal treatment of American prisoners led to executions and starvation in city halls, prisons, and a prison ship during the Revolution. Cunningham was hanged in 1791 for his crimes.
