Hog price outlook improves as U.S. hog herd shrinks

Iowa State University economist Gene Futrell says the USDA June Hog and Pig report points to a sharp drop in pork supplies this summer and fall. June 1 hog inventory at 48.2 million head shows a 19 percent year‑over‑year decline, with sow farrowings down 23 percent and farrowing plans easing further into 1976. Per capita pork supply may dip to 55–57 pounds, the smallest in nearly four decades, while prices stay high into midsummer before easing in fall.
