Iowa Public Safety Commissioner Charles Larson cautions residents to avoid fireworks during the July 4 weekend citing danger and illegality. He notes law enforcement will stop unlawful sales and prosecute violators with up to 90 days in jail or a $100 fine. Only caps snakes and sparklers may be used outside licensed displays.
Higher interest now influences lending as First National City Bank lifts its prime rate from 6 1/2 to 7 percent. The move follows Federal Reserve actions to slow money supply growth and ends a period of decline since last September.
The National Corn Growers Association projects a 1975 harvest of 5,929,803,000 bushels based on an 89 bushels per acre yield on 66,627,000 acres. Rain improved western belt prospects while dryland areas benefited from recent showers, though excessive rains and flooding in six Iowa counties affect conditions.
State Auditor Lloyd Smith said DOT officials will work with him to compile an accurate list of all public vehicles in Iowa. DOT Director Victor Preisser agreed to cooperate in tallying state owned vehicles across all Iowa political subdivisions.
Weather continued fair and hot with hazy conditions through Friday. Highs this afternoon in the upper 80s to low 90s, nights in the 60s to low 70s, and highs Friday around 90. Southwest winds 5 to 10 mph through tonight.
Jerry L. Cline files a 123003 dollar lawsuit in Washington County District Court against George and Martha J. Last of Wisconsin for injuries from a motorcycle collision on highway 78 near Lake Darling State Park at about 11 a.m. on July 4. The petition alleges Mrs. Last failed to control her car and made an unsafe turn without signaling. George Last is named as owner of the vehicle.
United Press International reports the Iowa Department of Environmental Quality and National Weather Service issued an air stagnation advisory for southeast Iowa. High pressure remains over the region for 24 to 36 hours with a strong inversion 5 000 to 6 000 feet up causing light winds and little mixing. Citizens with heart or respiratory issues are urged to stay indoors. The advisory covers Des Moines Marshalltown Waterloo Dubuque Cedar Rapids Ottumwa Iowa City Burlington and the Quad Cities area. The southeast corner and Quad Cities Burlington face the worst conditions.
New York City sanitation workers return to their duties after a three day wildcat strike that halted garbage collection. Union president John DeLury said the solution allows immediate resumption but hinges on state passage of a city tax raise plan to fund rehiring and layoffs.
Washington County youths find hay baling and bean cleaning paying jobs through the Youth Employment Service led by Cheryl Pfeifer. The program reports 83 applicants with 41 placed, noting repeat haying work and short term assignments while employers often pay above minimum wage and many eateries pay too little.
The Washington City Council will wait for action by the Board of Adjustment on Kenneth Fenn s appeal for a variance to replace a dilapidated house with a 36 by 50 foot storage building at Fenn Farm Service 917 N Second Ave If no demolition date is set by July 14 condemnation may begin. The Board will hold a hearing at 8 p.m next Wednesday.
The Washington Noon Kiwanis Club celebrated 25 years with a silver anniversary dinner at the Washington Country Club. About 100 Kiwanians, wives, and guests attended, with Legion of Honor awards for 25+ year members including T.M. Nelson and others. Dorothy Helscher honored for 13 years as organist. Vince Nelson attended as district governor along with sponsoring Iowa City club members.
The Rev. Max Belz of Walker Iowa will discuss a private Christian School at 8 p.m. on July 9 in the Reformed Presbyterian Church. The meeting seeks community interest in Washington and notes Belz’s role in organizing Cone Christian School at Walker and other communities.
Jim Ellefson of Waverly takes over duties as manager of the Washington Harrison Store on the east side of the square. He has five years with Harrison and moves with his wife Jane and daughter Jennifer to the community.
Highland Community District will elect three board members and a school district treasurer at the upcoming school election. Nomination papers are obtainable July 6 and must be returned to the school board secretary by 5 p.m. July 31. Terms of Robert Duncan Lyle Fox and John Spenner expire this year. The treasurer will take office July 1 1976. Each candidate needs a petition signed by at least ten qualified electors with an attached affidavit confirming signers are electors and signatures genuine.
Iowa Attorney General Richard C. Turner says the Legislature cannot retroactively raise the pay of its officers and employees without a two thirds vote in both houses. He cites Article III of the Iowa Constitution, noting legislative staff fall under public agents. The House approved a 7 to 10 percent retroactive increase to Jan 13, but failed to reach the required two thirds. Senate approval had been 37 to 10.
