Industrialist Bernard Goldfine acknowledged sending Christmas checks mostly of 50 dollars to 37 current and past federal employees including White House and Hill staffers. He claimed the payments were gifts to "poor workers" and said all but a few checks were cashed. The House subcommittee pressed for records on 776000 dollars in uncashed checks, while the IRS opened an inquiry into his tax handling of the gifts.

Arson Investigated After Four Fires In Harvey
Four small fires broke out in Harvey Iowa within two hours including two in school buildings. Marion County authorities suspect arson as the cause with all blazes started by old weeds. Fires occurred at an elementary school gym and two residences, but firefighters from Harvey and Knoxville contained them with only slight damage.

New Sharon Trucker Killed in County Collision
Henry Ross about 55 a truck driver from New Sharon Iowa was killed in a stock truck collision at a county road intersection six miles southwest of New Sharon Wednesday night. John De Young of New Sharon suffered minor injuries in the crash.

Rains slow Iowa flood search for missing victims
In Audubon and Exira areas, heavy rains hindered a flood death search reaching 16 confirmed dead with four still missing. About 600 searchers combed Nishnabotna River tributaries for bodies while treacherous mud and rising creeks kept crews at bay. Russell Smith of Exira was recovered near Davis Creek and a woman tentatively identified as Mrs. John Parsons was found south of Exira.

Prediction of Ten Highway Fatalities in Iowa 4th of July Weekend
Iowa Public Safety Commission predicts ten Iowans will die on highways during the three day July 4 weekend starting at 6 p m tonight. Officials outline a five point plan including full patrols dawn to dark radar checks and 75 000 safety cards to reduce fatalities and injuries.
