A United Press survey reports about 1,450 deaths from the heat with extensive damage to crops estimated at 10 million dollars. In Chicago 368 deaths are linked to heat with 183 from exposure and exertion, as Ohio Valley and eastern regions endure a severe heat wave.
Iowa prepared for Independence Day with normal weather after a heat wave, featuring dozens of community events, speeches by Jefferson County and state figures, and numerous picnics, parades, and fireworks.
