A horse entered a Chicago apartment building, climbing five flights of stairs to nibble matting on the fifth floor while residents and firemen battled a blaze. Firemen rescued screaming women from the flames as onlookers watched. a stable-trained Dobbin proved adept at stairs and descent without damage.
In LaSalle Illinois on July 3 William Keneke tried to stop a quarrel among Spring Valley partygoers at a fish fry. Ignatz Ernt struck Keneke with an axe inflicting three deadly blows. One blow buried the axe in Keneke’s lungs as the assailant unleashed the attack.
Satisified with his arm, the victim was struck again. Gorge Hoffman of Spring Valley tried to intervene and suffered a severe lower lip cut. The Ernet brothers fled but were jailed by Peru police amid rising farmer anger and talk of lynching. Ignatz Ernet, a butcher, struck Kencke during the clash. William Nael, present at the picnic, helped the wounded man and was stabbed in the back with a pitchfork but injuries are not serious.
John Nadermann a 46 year old farmer from Greensburg Indiana filed for annulment on grounds of fraud after his 19 year old Cincinnati fiancée refused to dance with him on their wedding night. He had funded her trip and planned to marry February 2 and says the refusal brought humiliation and ridicule among friends.
In Waukegan Illinois on July 3 a sister of Thomas Monaghan, an elderly farmer who died in Wauconda on June 11, asserts her belief of poisoning and calls for a post mortem. The coroner's jury previously ruled death from neuralgia of the heart.

Chicago July 8 three tons of molten iron exploded in the Illinois Steel works at South Chicago killing John Kabo instantly and injuring several others.

Cornell led late and finished first ahead of Columbia Wisconsin and Georgetown all setting world records as Syracuse and Pennsylvania trailed. Logansport Indiana July 3 W E B Hurd a grain dealer will celebrate the Fourth by burning the mortgage on his Johnston warehouse. He bought the warehouse five years ago with a $6000 mortgage and paid it off Monday. He will host open house and pay half a cent above market price for grain and sell binder twine to farmers at a reduced price.
Joliet Illinois July 8 The machinists strike at Bates Machine company is settled with 250 men going back to work. They receive 200 cents day pay for a nine hour day plus time and a half on Sundays double time on holidays and enforcement of union and apprenticeship rules.
