Interior Secretary Rogers C. B. Morton warned that overuse hides the spirit of parks and pledged new standards of usage. He spoke during the Blue Ridge Parkway 36th anniversary at Doughton Park near the NC border.
Richard J. Daley, longtime Chicago mayor and Democratic boss, is denied a seat at the convention. The committee voted 71 to 61 to seat 59 insurgents, not a 59-member Daley slate, and also decided to seat the Hawaii delegation despite underrepresentation of female delegates.
George C. Wallace will leave Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring Maryland next Friday for the first time since his May 15 assassination attempt. He will fly to the Democratic National Convention in Miami Beach on a special plane provided by President Nixon and make a planeside speech in Montgomery during a 30 minute stopover. Wallace plans a July 8 reception in Miami Beach for convention delegates.
In a UPI interview Juan V. Corona said he is innocent and looks forward to freedom. He expressed relief that a judge ordered his trial to begin September 5 in Fairfield. It was Corona's first news agency interview in a year.
On Friday night a gunbattle between the Storm Troopers motorcycle gang and the Pagans of Florida on Interstate 85 in Durham left two Storm Troopers dead and five Pagans injured. Six others were wounded, including two motorists.ark
The Iowa Agriculture Promotion Board adopted a sharp resolution criticizing President Nixon's elimination of meat-import quotas and its food price controls. Members warn the actions show inadequate agricultural knowledge and may signal broader controls on all food products.
Cleanup crews spread straw and absorbent material along 32 miles of the Schuylkill River from Douglassville to Phoenixville to trap six million gallons of oil spilled by the Agnes flood. Coast Guard calls it the worst inland spill in U.S. history.
