The Mississippi River rose to near its all time crest, flooding most levees around St. Louis. Thousands homeless in Missouri and Illinois, with 5 500 in the immediate St. Louis area. Levees at Degognia Fountain Bluff and others breached. evacuations ordered. Grand Tower isolated as the river stood at 40 feet, just shy of the 1844 record.

New Car Registrations Rise With Trailers Popular
County treasurer W. E. Howell reports 284 new car licenses this year to date, with 46 issued in June and 777 farm trailer licenses over six months. Total auto licenses reach 5,435 plus 1,137 truck licenses and 150 six month truck licenses. No new license tags will be issued this year. a small validation tag will replace plates next year to save metal and reduce costs.

Sarah J. Rinehart, 85, died after a stroke at her sister Mrs. Frank Isett’s home in Columbus Junction. She had suffered paralysis four weeks earlier at Mrs. Della Little’s home where she had worked as a housekeeper for seven years. Burial will be at Columbus City cemetery. She was born July 4, 1861, in Columbus City and was a member of the Presbyterian church. She is survived by her sister and two brothers. a sister predeceased her.

A truckload of furniture and clothing reached Capt. Laleness Salvation Army flood relief HQ in Ottumwa marking the end of the in-kind drive.
