Sioux City column notes city council and doctors reached a compromise over Dr. Benjamin Courshon’s pay. The annual salary was set at 2400 after protests against a prior 2000 reduction from 3440. The agreement ends a dispute between the city and local physicians.
Des Moines Iowa motorists were urged by Chief John Hattery of the state highway patrol to take precautions on Independence Day trips. Patrolmen will be concentrated in high traffic areas to facilitate safe movement, amid a highway death toll of 183 this year.
Henry Hanson, 39, of Marion, was inspecting gas pipes in a dwelling basement when a stove installation failed and an explosion occurred after he struck a match. He was hospitalized with serious burns.
The body of Denis Goodwin five son of Mr and Mrs Goodwin was recovered from the American Legion swimming pool in Carroll. Coroner A F Smith said the boy had been dead about four hours. The pool closes at 11 pm and the child reportedly climbed a fence to swim early. No inquest will be held.
Sioux City reports the body of 22 year old Josephine Baker of the Standing Rock agency was recovered from Half Moon lake after a swimming party failed to see her again. Four companions were detained for questioning as police investigate the death.
A Council Bluffs youth, Clifford Allen aged 18 and an Eldora training school fugitive, pleaded to be sent to Anamosa reformatory to learn a trade. District Judge Earl Peters sentenced him to 10 years for car theft after he and Harry Herk of Mason City escaped June 7 and confessed to stealing five cars and robbing four filling stations.
Four additional candidates filed primary election expense affidavits with the county auditor. Harve P. Wilson reported 2952 dollars mainly for newspaper notices and cards. Joe W. Rich tallied 22.60 dollars for newspaper ads. Roy Fetters listed 24.06 dollars for newspaper ads and election cards. Miss Ethel Grecian, renominated for county auditor, filed 72.86 dollars, with portage and newspaper ads the largest items. Candidates must file within thirty days after the primary.

A resolution of necessity will be passed by the city council as soon as possible.

Washington post office will not deliver mail next Monday July 4. Postmaster M C DeLong announced the general delivery window will open from eight to ten in the morning for stamp sales only.
A total of 47 names were added to the Iowa State Historical Society membership. Among those chosen at yesterday’s meeting was Representative E. C. Eicher of Washington Iowa. A date will be set for bids and contract awards, with further steps pending right of way deals.

Governor Kraschel opened a three way peace conference in Des Moines to end the Newton Maytag factory strike idle since May 9. He blamed outsiders and radicals for dragging Iowa into the dispute while the Maytag company CIO union and back to work group seek a settlement.
