Burlington LOU Daniels spotted a rattlesnake by a road while walking. He tried to kill it with a stick. When the snake prepared to strike he jumped onto his tracer and rode away. The snake had nine rattles and measured 45 inches.
Robbery at Reis home near Brighton ends with a gunshot wound to Donald Smith 18 or 19 from Sockum Ridge. Companion Toby Tucker 21 known as Kenneth Hollenbeck is sought. Werent vigilant by police, the pair allegedly forced Reis to surrender valuables totaling about 83 dollars plus 2.50 and a watch. Authorities set a trap after a tip and hope for Tucker’s capture. Smith expected to recover barring infection or pneumonia.
Nearly 300 Girl Reserves from 10 midwestern states arrive in Grinnell for a 10 day conference. Miss Betty Lyle of New York heads round table discussions. All attendees are high school reserve officers. Nearby Iowa Falls plans a Fourth of July bridge dedication with Senator Louis Murphy as speaker, sponsored by the American Legion post and local business leaders.
A Sioux City post of the American Legion reports enrolling 1,300 members. The delegation from Monahan post traveled to Des Moines to report to state headquarters and aims to top the Iowa department.
Mrs. Peterson, listed as the Nashua mother Mrs. Bartlett Peters on the barn, sustained critical head and neck injuries after falling from a hay load. She was holding a ladder as a hay fork was being fixed when a loose coupling caused the fall through an open barn door onto a cement floor.

A gas stove explosion at C. W. Witboard bakery in Eddyville Mahaska County ignited a fire that destroyed the bakery Saville Wilcox barber shop Henry C Jackson grocery and Dr F M McCrea’s office. The loss totaled 36000 with 20000 building and 16000 contents. Two youths were injured and one rescuer overcome by heat while water access failed due to pumping limits and nearby wells. An earlier 35 year old fire had similarly damaged the site and an Oskaloosa fire truck failed to arrive due to a burned bearing.
A 60 piece Newton drum and bugle corps, state prize winner for boys, will perform during the Centennial celebration in Washington. The corps, ages 6 to 14, drew tears from onlookers at Boone state contest for its precise, drilled unit. Funded by the American Legion, Centennial committee, and Chamber of Commerce with Legion contributing over half the cost.
Mr and Mrs Vincent Keesey and two daughters Frances and Ann of Philadelphia arrive for a six weeks visit with Mrs C W Stewart in Des Moines. Miss Mary Wilson of Des Moines is due this afternoon to visit in the Stewart home.
The Ainsworth group staged an old time program yesterday afternoon under Mrs E W Spessard with a quilting party led by Mrs Mary Chambers. Cast included Florence Marr Nellie and Norbert Norris, plus a sextet of girls and a spinning wheel scene with Mrs Reaney and others.
The county 4-H clubs gathered in the G A building at the courthouse for an election lasting last night. Officers were chosen to serve the coming year with Wilke OL and Webulogion noted among the secretary and treasurer posts. The boys plan a prominent parade role Saturday.
D. F. Good of west of Washington was fined $25 and two sections of his driver’s license removed for reckless driving. He appeared before Justice of the Peace J. K. Bovee after being arrested by State Highway Patrolman James Gildroy.

Harley Cole a Brighton boy was injured in a car ride incident yesterday afternoon. He fell from a moving car driven by Charles Robertson, striking his head and losing consciousness. He suffered a severe concussion but was reported improving at Washington County Hospital.
Five Kalona youths traveling to Washington for the county centennial celebration were in a ditch after striking a gravel hole four miles south of Kalona. All suffered minor injuries with Donald Esselschwerdt and Ralph Collingt sustaining a few cuts. Driver was Clifford Perkins.
