Iowa Senate votes to exempt food and drugs from sales tax
DES MOINES UP I Senate Republicans blocked a move to broaden the tax bill and pressed toward final approval of removing the 3 percent sales tax on food and prescription drugs. The measure would exempt human food items like milk fish meat vegetables and eggs while keeping taxes on soft drinks and ice. The fiscal director estimates a savings of 31 to 33 million dollars for Iowa taxpayers.

Pan American World Airways 707 with 101 aboard crashed near Pago Pago in a violent thunderstorm. Witnesses say 91 were killed, many burned and trapped in the burning wreckage. Survivors include three women and seven men, with eight in serious condition from heavy burns.
