A total of 81 woolen quilts were made and sent to Camp Elliott in San Diego California by the United Service Women unit in Manchester. Other Delaware county units contributed and last week’s shipment included 43 wheelchair pillows 10 dozen handkerchiefs and several pounds of cheap jewelry sent to Mare Island California for use by soldiers in dealing with natives.

Two Farm Tires Are Reported in Keokuk Co
SIGOURNEY Two fires about four miles apart Saturday destroyed 100 tons of baled hay and a double corn crib filled with corn. The baled hay burned at the farm of Frank Niman five miles north of here. Neighbors saved farm buildings. The corn crib fire at 11 p.m. was on the farm of John Witten. Seven sows also burned.

Hunting Cow in Fog Ends in Tragic Farm Deaths
Panora Iowa area Mr and Mrs Ferdinand Vogel aged 76 and 80 died while searching in dense fog for a cow due to calf. Bodies found late Saturday night and Sunday afternoon about a half mile from home. Coroner said exposure caused their deaths.

Polk County Fifth Auto Fatality in 1944
Des Moines man John M. Tree aged 71 died at Broadlawns General Hospital after being struck by an car driven by 18 year old Don Tilton of Norwalk. Tree was walking near the Des Moines municipal airport entrance on S W Twenty first street while on his way to work. It was Polk County’s fifth traffic fatality this year.

Plan Tuberculin Test Program in County
Twenty eight home project township chairmen and health leaders met at the Farm Bureau office to discuss a county wide tuberculin testing program funded by the county tuberculosis association with the health unit medical society and Women’s home project. Dr Ruth Church outlined testing for high school pupils first grade and kindergarten and their parents at test time. All attendees supported the plan as a step to expand health activities to adults amid rising tuberculosis rates recently. March of Dimes drives raise 558.88 at two theaters
Management of the State and Fox theaters announced today that 558.88 was collected at the two houses last week in the March of Dimes campaign for infantile paralysis. Boy Scouts collected from Jan 24 to Jan 30 as funds were gathered at performances. This year’s total more than doubles last year’s drive and half stays locally while the other half goes to the national fund.

Air Force selectees Crull and Turnipseed join cadet program

Funeral of Mrs. Rownd Held Today in Pasadena
Funeral services were held in Pasadena California for Mrs Ella Rownd Sr a former Washington resident. She died Friday morning January 28 after a year of ill health. Born in Grand Prairie Jackson township she was the daughter of William Madison and Margaret Ann Glasgow. Surviving are three daughters Lurana Holroyd of Albion Iowa and Mrs O S Palmer of Pasadena. A daughter Mrs Fred Taylor died in Lewistown Montana in 1940. Her husband Marion J Rownd preceded her in death.
