Liquor profits fund Iowa counties and cities in 1972
Nearly 11 million dollars in liquor profits supported local government in fiscal 1972. Rolland Gallagher said 7.7 million went to cities and towns while 3.2 million supported counties. State treasurer distributes ten percent of gross liquor store sales to incorporated areas in January and July on a per capita basis, with city shares ranging from 67 to 755,424 dollars and county shares including Washington County at 20,126 dollars. Five percent goes to counties as property tax loss reimbursements for soldiers exemptions or credits, with examples in Henry, Jefferson, Johnson, and Washington counties. City and town receipts include Des Moines at 23,694 dollars and numerous area towns listed.
