Washington editor Bruce Cowden dies at 80
Bruce C. Cowden longtime Washington Journal news editor and Ramblings and Remnants columnist died Friday night at Washington County Hospital. Born October 11, 1885 in Crawfordsville he worked at the Journal since 1902 and championed community projects including the Washington County Fair and Lake Darling Youth Center. He was active in Rotary Toastmasters and local churches and clubs. Burial is in Crawfordsville with services Monday at 3 30 p.m. in Jones Funeral Home.

Funeral rites for Edwin Griffith in Deming New Mexico
Private funeral services were held for Edwin H. Griffith of Deming. He died January 25 after a seven day illness. Griffith, born March 7, 1909, in Washington, was a school teacher who served overseas for the U S government and spent time in Munich and Athens before WWII. He was active with the local YMCA and a Methodist. Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Dale Fuhr of Washington and Mrs. John Swazil of Burlington.

Clinton man guilty of manslaughter in niece death
Larry Heath, 24, of Clinton was found guilty of manslaughter in the December death of two year old Ruby Anne Schipper while Heath baby sat. The Clinton County District Court delivered the verdict after five hours of deliberation in a second degree murder trial. The prosecution pressed mental retardation testimony while the defense cited reliability concerns about a key witness.

Farm Home Burns North of Haskins
A farm home on the John Irwin farm 3% miles northeast of Haskins was completely destroyed by fire this morning. Only a few belongings of occupant Glen Wood were saved as sub zero weather froze fire equipment after Ainsworth firefighters arrived at 8 30 a.m. Mr Wood managed to remove a gun collection a television set and a few other items before the blaze spread.
