Washington fuel shortages bite as oil dealers report limited stocks and no capacity for new customers. Winter spikes left some without fuel and January quotas hinder replenishment while weather ahead could force an emergency. Some residents switch to coal and wood stoves and blend low grade oils to stretch supplies.
Rodney Q. Selby Iowa fuel oil coordinator plans an urgent conference with advisory members to prevent shortages via equitable distribution. Clyde Clark 62 died at 11 this morning at his home 709 West Second Street after a December 26 stroke. Funeral services are set for 1:30 at Jones funeral home and 2:30 at a Wayland church. Born November 3, 1885 in Wayland, he was married twice and lived in Washington recently. Survived by wife, two daughters, two sons, two brothers, four grandsons and four stepchildren. He worked at the Cornbelt turkey plant and was a United Brethren church member.
David Livingston of Washington spoke at the 54th annual convention of the Northeastern Retail Lumbermen association in session at the Hotel Pennsylvania New York. The meeting gathered about twenty five hundred representatives of the lumber industry.
Mr. Livingston addressed the afternoon session focusing on the topic A customer Who Has Cash How Are You Selling Him. The three day convention drew industry attendees and featured marketing discussions.
Harold Stassen, campaigning in New Hampshire, accepts Rex Karney’s invitation for a debate with Thomas Dewey on foreign and domestic affairs. West Chester residents Mr and Mrs Irvin Coffey and Mr and Mrs Harry Dusenbery reported a hotel fire Tuesday night in Cedar Rapids. The Coffeys were awakened by dense smoke and learned a blaze was in a near by room. The Dusenbergs saw flames outside their window and clothing from the burning room burned on the balcony. The seventh floor corridor filled with evacuees but no serious injuries occurred as the fire was confined to one room.
Funeral services for Merton F King were held Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock in the Sherman funeral home with Rev T C Polk in charge. Pallbearers were C W Tucker Max Marble L E Dunlap Joe Maxwell Ernest Garrett and Fred Bourgeois. Burial was in Elm Grove cemetery.
President Truman asked Congress for an extension of grain control powers beyond Saturday to October 31. He urged substantial cuts in grain use by distillers, permitting 2,500,000 bushels monthly under an allocation plan. he argued the industry can withstand depletion of stocks. The Senate approved a one month extension, but the House Banking Committee blocked even that.
An ear of corn five feet long was entered by Don Radda of Washington county Iowa in the 11th annual national radio corn festival in Des Moines Iowa. A tall corn entry and an odd-rowed car shown by W ke Koble of Truro are part of the two day show hosted by radio station WHO Des Moines with entries from across the United States and Canada.
Malcomb Lewis a about 30 year old farmer of Toledo was killed and his companion Donald Carlson 25 Chelsea was listed in very serious condition after their car struck Otter Creek bridge three miles west of Toledo late yesterday. The fatality marks Tama county's first highway death of the new year.
The state public safety commission reports that drivers losing licenses under the new rule must show future financial responsibility of 11 000 a year for three years. If not posted within six days, vehicle registrations are confiscated. October and November 1947 saw thousands of accidents and insured drivers, with substantial property damage.

Paul Fern proprietor of Ferns Bakery announced a public open house to inspect the newly installed oven and remodeled sales room. The bakery has closed this week for equipment installation and remodeling with no merchandise for sale, but visitors can see the plant in operation.
Water supplies on the northwest and west sides of Chicago were shut off after an ice jam blocked the Wilson avenue crib in Lake Michigan. About 1.5 million people in the city and suburbs including Oak Park Elmwood Park and Park Ridge faced disrupted service as three pumping stations reported near zero pressure. Fire officials warned of potential blazes with low water pressure while workers missed coffee and commutes were affected.

Combs of Franklin township was re appointed county weed commissioner at the Wednesday morning session.

Jan 29 Des Moines Brig. Gen. Charles Grahl state adjutant general denied rumors that the Iowa national guard was calling men to active federal service. He said rumors persisted in many towns and may stem from reserve personnel returning to duty and stories of orders against guardsmen who had not applied for such duty.
In Davenport Iowa twenty one hotel guests were overcome by gas from a furnace leak. Speras Demer 58 was hospitalized in fair condition. The hotel operators Mrs Chester Graham reported illness started about 1 am. An emergency squad used oxygen to revive three victims as others recovered after officers opened windows.
