Secretary of War Patterson said the Army will renew its request to extend the draft law beyond May 15. A new manpower survey underway will assess needs after June 56, with emphasis on meeting obligations at home and overseas. He warned some American forces could be evacuated in the next few months. Secretary of Labor Schweilenbach outlined details of a final settlement with 7,300 striking AFL drivers across North and South Dakota Nebraska Minnesota Iowa Missouri and Kansas. The agreement calls for a 15 percent wage increase upon return to work, with union leaders reporting a substantial deal after talks involving seven midwestern senators and labor officials. Des Moines January 29 R J Coverdale from Pstherville appointed regional organization director for the Iowa Farm Bureau to replace Loren Airy of Washington D D. Groves announced today. Coverdale takes over immediately heading the southeast Iowa region. Airy resigned to join a commercial hybrid seed corn firm. Coverdale previously served as Lyon county agent and Buena Vista extension director, and for two years was Estherville farm manager.
Herbert Hauge a 39 year old Des Moines attorney was named to the board of control filling the vacancy created by Davia McCreery’s resignation. Hauge recently left the army as a lieutenant colonel after service in Germany with the 86th division and the army signal corps. The appointment by Governor Robert Blue takes effect immediately and lasts until the next legislative session when re approval by the senate is required.

Harry Hopkins longtime Roosevelt confidant and New Deal relief administrator died at Memorial Hospital in New York at 56 after months of ill health. He served as a key advisor to Roosevelt and later to Truman, with last overseas mission in 1945 to Moscow. Funeral plans were not announced.
A drive by Leon Beatty post of the American Legion aims to reach 500 members, up from about 400. Mrs. Bessie B. Sickels aged 73 died Friday January 25 at her residence 2210 Mission Road San Antonio Texas. She was survived by her husband Ira L. Sickels. Services were held at 3 p m Saturday from the chapel by the Southside Funeral.
CHICAGO January 29 UP district director Herbert March says he is arranging talks between United Packinghouse Workers CIO and Armour and Co to avert a new strike. He accuses the company of delaying strikers’ return but believes the issue can be ironed out in a meeting. DETROIT January 29 UP a federal mediator plans a meeting tomorrow between General Motors President Charles E Wilson and CIO UAW Vice President Walter P Reuther to end a 70 day old CAW strike. James Dewey, a Schwellenbach aide, met Wilson and then Reuther to urge resumed negotiations. He declined further comment. A source declined to reveal identity to avoid upsetting arrangements.
Funeral services for Mrs Walter Orris of Denver Colorado will be held at 10 oclock Wednesday morning at the Clarence Heras home in Crawfordsville Rev Erik Voss of Brighton will conduct the service and burial will be in Crawfordsville cemetery Mrs Orris died at her Denver home Saturday night and the body will arrive at Mt Pleasant early tomorrow morning The Crayne funeral home Mr Pleasant has charge of arrangements George Yeager of Crawfordville is a brother of Mrs Orris
Mrs. Sickels, long time resident of San Antonio after moving from Washington Iowa, was honored in a home ceremony officiated by Rev. C. W. Harrison. Interment followed at Roselawn Burial Park, marking the end of her twenty year stay in the city.
