Washington County sheriff's officers fished a stolen safe from the Skunk River in Keokuk County north of Richland after a resident spotted it in the water. The safe had been taken weeks earlier from the Washington County Farm Store. hinges were pried and some papers inside were recovered. Short tax form usage grows for 1973 returns with Form 1040A aimed at standard deductions and wage earners. The Form 1040 carries no upper limit on reportable amounts, IRS official says.

Kalona Joe Allen owner and operator of the Super Valu Store says $591 in cash and about $1,700 in endorsed checks were stolen from the store safe Saturday. He believes the theft occurred between 11 and 12 during lunch hour and appeals to customers who paid by check to report to recover funds. Investigators were called and continuing the case today.
Washington High School will be represented in the state large group speech contest at Bettendorf by four students. They earned top ratings Saturday at Muscatine for their duet acting. Jane Sotelo and Mark Keedy performed Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf and Lisa Schumacher and Cathy Mangold performed Mary Stuart.
The YMCA held the first tryout session for the Y's spring musical The Sound of Music, drawing over 100 participants. An additional audition night is set for Thursday January 31 from 7 30 to 9 00 PM. Organizers hope for more actors, especially for girls' chorus and child roles, with director Leon Hillman and musical director Calvin Wolf praising the talent but noting matching voice and size for parts.

Washington County and Region II seek $30,000 in state matching funds to develop brochures and tourism materials. Mrs. Robert Day represents the county on Region II, soliciting contributions and coordinating via the Washington county fund. Region II includes 14 counties with a meeting slated at the Harlan Hotel in Mt. Pleasant Tuesday noon.
