Fire believed caused by insulation smoldered into flames on steam pipes, inflicting about 1000 dollars damage to Hotel Russell Lamson. A separate 5000 dollar fire confined to four storage rooms. In Marshalltown, Mrs Alfred A Mackey, 25, died of smallpox shortly after childbirth, the first local death from smallpox in years.
Des Moines reports that a bill to make incurable insanity adequate grounds for divorce was recommended to the Iowa house by the house judiciary committee No. 2. A senate passage two years ago failed in the house.
Mrs. Margaret A. Aasgaard 28 of Waterloo charges her husband Andrew C. Aasgaard 43 with keeping her in the state hospital at Independence long after she was ready for release so he could live with another woman. Judge A. R. B. Lovejoy approves a property settlement and custody of two minor children.
Four University of Iowa scientists report purified thrombin in Science as a wound treatment. Using a perfume atomizer to deliver the blood-clotting element, they claim to stop profuse bleeding in two to ten seconds. Researchers named are Dr. W. H. Seegers, Dr. E. D. Warner, Dr. K. M. Brinkhous, and Dr. H. P. Smith.
Des Moines report notes a bill from the aeronautics committee prohibiting acrobatic flying over crowds. Authored by Representative L. C. Bowers, the measure follows stunt flights over the grandstand at the 1938 Iowa State Fair.
A steel post under a car hood snagged the vehicle as it skidded on an icy curve and struck a bridge rail east of Mapleton. Richard Olson and Jack Jones, both of Sioux City, leaped seven feet to the ground as the car dangled from the post. Jones suffered a broken toe and Olson endured severe cuts.
Iowa residents warned against buying low priced shaving brushes made in Japan labeled Japan 332 or Imperial Sterilized or Obelisk Sterilized. Dr. Walter Bierring state health commissioner said the items were distributed by a St. Paul wholesale house to stores and pharmacies in Iowa and may carry anthrax infection.
Sioux City court blames three tavern proprietors for the embezzlement acts of Marion V. Ellis, the Watson Brothers Transportation Co. local manager who confessed stealing company funds. The firm sued John Bylin for 769 dollars and Jack Burns and Herman Oakwood for 447 dollars over losses tied to Ellis gambling on tip books at the two taverns.
Major C Douglas Booth of London addressing an audience of several hundred opened a four session series on world affairs in Washington He praised US cooperation with allies and trade treaties while criticizing tariff walls and British protectionism He predicted German and Italian rulers will fall but saw no imminent war and noted future speakers include Margaret Kaiser next Friday in the series coordinated by local clubs and groups
Des Moines report says the state planning board backs higher appropriations for four insane hospitals and two institutions for feeble minded and epileptics. The board urged lawmakers to increase funding to these six facilities.
Mrs. W. E. Howell and son Ted Allen cared for Bert Arnold after his stroke in Albia, while Mrs. Arnold and Mrs. Howell are sisters. The John Pebler family moved to 1002 North Second Ave from East Madison. Mrs. Carl Hedges will vacation in Tampa Florida. I Rothschild and Marie Jackson plan a Chicago buying trip for spring goods with style shows and clinics.
Thousands of loyalist soldiers and refugees crossed into France fleeing Spanish insurgents. Loyalist regiments were interned pending French disposition while France aided border guards against stampedes. At least 4,000 crossed since last midnight as refugees clutching few possessions crowd the frontier near Perthus and the Catalonia coast near Barcelona.
Margaret McCall, 16, covered her brother David’s route at the Journal office while he was ill with the flu. It was her first time as a paper boy, but she delivered the papers on time and found the experience enjoyable. David, 13, has returned to the route, which covers No. 4 including the south side of East Main Street and the east end of East Washington.
Funeral services set for 2 30 Sunday at L A Jones funeral home for George W Frain 1033 Wes Monroe Street death occurred yesterday evening after a long illness He was born October 2 1866 near Wee Chester and lived most of his life in Grace Hill Dutch Creek township Members of his New Haven Baptist church and surviving family are noted with the obituary detailing his life and residence changes.
The Senate passed an amendment barring political activity under the WPA appropriation of 725 million dollars. Among attendees, Mrs. Eldin Bauer and Mrs. Walter Bauer of West Chester and several others from Keota Ainsworth Crawfordsville and Morning Sun were in the area yesterday. The county seventh and eighth grade report cards are being distributed in the County Superintendent's office with rural teachers collecting them in town. uncollected cards will be mailed Monday.
Funeral services for Mrs Willard Hunter will be held Sunday at 3 30 p m at Rall Wittich funeral home. Rev Vance Webster will officiate. Burial in Greenwood cemetery. She was born January 28 1908 and lived in Muscatine all her life. Survived by husband Willard Hunter son Marlan Dean parents Mr and Mrs Andrew Schultz two sisters Leona Elfers and Mildred Edwards. Daughter Gwendolyn Joy preceded in death.
Two convicts at the state reformatory in Anamosa were returned to custody and each sentenced to five additional years by District Judge J. Heiserman. Lloyd Barton aged 21 from Boone county for forgery escaped from University hospital at Iowa City in June 1938. Andy Vestrum aged 40 from Emmet county for auto theft escaped from the prison fort at Care in April 1942.
Three vaccination clinics in Washington county this week total 416 small pox vaccinations after events at Washington Wellman and Kalona. In Wellman 157 small pox and 16 diphtheria immunizations, Kalona 51 small pox and 2 diphtheria, with 190 at Washington. Doctors in offices contribute but totals pending.
Wilma Kerr Frances and Kathryn Stewart and Naomi Wilson, students at 8 U. S., arrived yesterday afternoon to spend the weekend at their respective homes.
In New York, Harry Crosby Sr. father of Bing Crosby and Charles Vallee father of Rucy met for the first time at a radio station. The brief item notes these two men as early influences in crooning.
John Harold Kreibs, 37, cashier at the First National Bank of DeWitt Iowa, was arrested at a private hospital. Federal agents found 410,000 and a 5 000 packet at the scene. He faced embezzlement charges for shortages totaling about 980,000 across late 1938.
Aston traveled to Denver to attend the funeral of his half sister Colene Edwards 17 formerly of Washington who died at her Denver home after three weeks with heart illness. She was the daughter of Harry and Sophia Edwards. survived by two sisters Mrs Charles Berard of Grafton North Dakota and Helen of Denver, one brother Leo of Grafton, and half-brother Ed Aston of Wallington. Funeral arrangements were to be in Denver.
Des Moines reports Representative Leo Hoegh proposes merging the commerce and journalism departments from Ames with the State University of Iowa in Iowa City. The plan would transfer these divisions to Iowa City and join them with existing units on the university campus.
