Representative Dean W. Feisen of Hardin County returns nearly 41 dollars of a 150 dollar allotment to attend the Council of State Governments meeting in Washington. The act underscores calls for economy in state government and reflects measured personal spending.
Ronald Reed of Creston recovered a bicycle from McKinley Lake after five ice holes were cut. The effort followed court testimony that the bike was stolen out of spite and dumped into the lake.
Des Moines reports opposition from the State University of Town Alumni association to eliminating the university college of engineering. Donald D. Holdwegel, Des Moines attorney and district board member, says the board will discuss the legislative proposal that the school be discontinued due to duplication with Iowa State College’s engineering department at Ames.
Cedar Falls officials answered J. B. Clay a local manufacturer who accused municipal utilities of mismanagement and secret operation. Clay claimed rates were about 40 percent higher than they should be.
In Waterloo an elderly woman crossed the tracks as a Rock Island train neared. Harry R. Foster a Waterbury Teacher leapt in front of the engine and carried her to safety.
DES MOINES A former truck driver Jacob Heck 32 self styled protector of kids scored his first Brasor victory in a one man crusade to drive pinball machines out of Des Moines. His testimony led to condemnation of a pinball machine seized Jan 18 at the Country Club buffet. Shouts of perjury and references to an attempted payoff enlivened the hearing before Municipal Judge Ralph Powers.
Alfred Lee McIntire of Morrison pleaded guilty to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated in Waterloo. District Judge A. B. Lovejoy sentenced him to 60 days in jail. When asked about an attorney McIntire said he was guilty and would represent himself, noting there are too many drunken drivers on the road.
Dr. R B Ristine, Mount Pleasant hospital superintendent, warns Iowa state institutions face severe overcrowding and understaffing. He cites 30 to 40 patients per bathing setup and a staff of five responsible for about 1500 patients. Attendants work 14 hours a day for $40 monthly, causing high turnover and no training opportunities.
Des Moines Frederick W. Hubbell was elected president of the Equitable Life Insurance Company of Iowa succeeding Henry Nollen at the annual board meeting. Hubbell has served 19 years as vice president and treasurer. Nollen becomes chairman of the board. F C Hubbell moves to finance chair. James W Hubbell remains secretary and treasurer.
United Press reports Nazi Germany marks six years since Hitler rise to power by stressing production and employment. Industrial output soared since 1932 with unemployment dropping, while foreign trade stayed weak and shortages in foods and fuels persist.
Dan Brindley has leased the Standard Service station on East Washington from Standard Oil and will begin work February first. The Brindleys relocate from Moline with children Donnie and Linda Ann and will live at 715 South Iowa Avenue. The Ahrens family moves March first to a northwest farm they recently bought after selling their home on West Madison Street.
Mr Sherman Wolf and Mrs Wolf traveled to Des Moines for business yesterday, visiting local offices and handling a scheduled meeting.
Franco forces bombarded loyalist lines and targets near Figueras as 20 rebel divisions advanced in the northwest capturing two towns and attacking a third. Barcelona imposed military rule as Figueras suffered a major air raid that killed and wounded many, with thousands fleeing the chaos.
Washington doctors vaccinated 190 children yesterday at the Y M C A with 1385 students from local schools. Participating physicians included Dr. T. M. Mast Dr. W L Alcorn Dr C A Broke Dr W S Kyle Dr A Keith Droz and Dr D C Barrett director of the Washington county health unit. School nurse Eileen Jeffrey assisted the children and several women aided the doctors in the day’s vaccination effort.
William H. Minick died this morning at his home 505 North Iowa avenue after five years of ill health and a week of bed rest. He was born April 11, 1857 in Washington, married Sadie Lille in 1886, and worked 37 years as a bridge carpenter for Rock Island railway, retiring in 1927. He was a member of Odd Fellows and Rebekah lodges, survived by four grandchildren and one great grandchild, with several children deceased. Funeral services are set for Sunday at 2 p.m. at L. A. Jones funeral home with Dr. Arthur Atack officiating. burial in Elm Grove cemetery.
A picture will be presented as a four prize for a year to the county church with the best proportionate representation at the older boys and girls conference in the Methodist church at Crawtordaville next Monday, Jan. 394. For the past year it has been held by the Washington A M E church.
A formal impeachment demand seeks an immediate hearing against Frances Perkins the first woman cabinet member and two others James L. Houghteling and Gerard D. Reilly. Rep Parnell Thomas New Jersey introduced the measure accusing them of high crimes for halting deportation proceedings against Harry Bridges C I O official.
Vic Steverding of Grundy Center, state commander of the American Legion, spoke to Washington business leaders at a Chamber of Commerce luncheon. He emphasized youth citizenship programs, Boys State, and Legion efforts in community service, veterans relief, and national defense, with more than 100 attendees.
Two of three men named in yesterday’s grand jury indictments posted bonds and were freed. Justin North remained jailed after failing to post. he is charged with burning his insured International truck to defraud Policyholders Mutual Casualty Co. of West Liberty for 2590 dollars. Howard J. McCleery posted bond to cover 2500 for alleged embezzlement from the National Bank of Washington. James Reranek, charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, posted 1500 and was released.
James Coleman aged 33 of Ottumwa died at home from a heart attack. He formerly coached and led Ainsworth school for two years, then taught manual training in Ottumwa public schools for five years. Funeral in Ottumwa First Methodist Church. Burial in Nora Springs Iowa. He had suffered infantile paralysis last year and spent months in an iron lung at University Hospital Iowa City.
Washington Jan 27 The Senate overrode President Roosevelt’s recommendation for 875 million dollars to operate the WPA through June 30 by a single vote 46 to 47. The administration amendment restoring 100 million to the bill failed as the measure passed by the House had reduced appropriations to 720 million.

Rev. Jacob De Koning, county missionary in charge, announced the change per Journal correspondence from Pilotburg. The event now runs all day Sunday at Milotburg church on February 11, not the following Sunday.
Street Commissioner Blaine Holmes asks residents to clear snow from sidewalks as required by city ordinance. If homeowners fail to remove snow, the city will perform the work and charge the property owner.

Five senators introduced a bill to consolidate state relief and welfare into the Iowa Department of Public Welfare, with a five member policy board appointed by the governor and confirmed by the senate. The plan creates four divisions including old age relief and child welfare, raises maximum old age pension to 39 dollars, and replaces county boards with state boards.
Swartzendruber of Wellman was arraigned before Justice J B Bovee and ordered held to the grand jury on a $1000 bond. He is charged with breaking and entering a building used for sale of goods, specifically the Wehrle filling station in Wellman, about one o clock yesterday morning before being caught by Raymond Livesey Wellman city watch.
