Editor Heacocks Barn Burned to Ground

Fire swept Editor Heacock’s barn destroying the structure and its contents. No injuries reported as firefighters battled the flames and secured neighboring buildings. Local authorities investigate the cause of the blaze.

Two Animals Burned In Surrey Barn Fire

A Brighton Iowa barn near the railroad burned yesterday afternoon destroying a 14 by 16 structure and a buggy shed. A horse and cow perished in the blaze and the owner reports no insurance. The cause is not known though sparks from a westbound Iowa Central engine are suspected.

Weather and social notes from Washington D C and Iowa

The forecast for Iowa calls for generally fair and continued cold weather tonight and Friday. Social items include Mr and Mrs F Stewart hosting a tea for friends including Mr and Mrs Wright from Burlington Vermont and Emma Wyse and Jessie Davis wedding notices. Keys Found On Two Tramps At Station

Marshal Jack Heath disturbed two sleeping tramps inside a railway building at the station and seized a large bunch of keys. About a dozen keys were of various sizes including two large store door keys, with the rest being safe and drawer keys. Heath ordered them to leave town at once or face lodging in the county jail with larger keys turned after them.

Penitentiary Intake Noted for Former Convict Welch

Yesterday evening Deputy Black and J C Ford escorted criminals to the penitentiary where Deputy Warden identified Harry Welch, a known Ainsworth burglar, as a former convict. Welch previously served nine months under a different name. All inmates were placed in solitary except McIlrath who was assigned to the chair factory.

Morning church services were held at St James church at 6 30 7 30 and 8 00. The piece notes a Solemn Requiem High Mass for the father of Father Jacobsmeier and mentions family and clergy. Coldest Night Drops to Six Below Zero

The cold spell peaked last night with temperatures dropping to six below zero. By morning the reading warmed to zero as weather conditions show slight improvement and winds ease.

Court adjourns to February for various dispositions

The court adjourned this afternoon until February 2 and listed dispositions from the last issue. Cases include Thompson vs Thompson with a homestead decree for the defendant, Heacock liens due by February 6, Kemble retax costs to be heard February 6, and Osborn case with $75 plus costs awarded to Wilson.

Woman suffers rib fracture after fall at home

Mrs. Sarah Hite, mother of J. Hite, fell on cellar steps early this week and sustained a fractured rib. She is recovering but the accident could have been worse for an elderly person. Examinations are planned at the court house Friday and Saturday under the superintendent. Burlington, Iowa, January 28. A fire destroyed the North Hill school building early today, likely starting from furnaces.
