Montezuma Henry Sabin, 50, of Waterloo, and A. W. Gordon, 69, of Montezuma, were seriously injured Friday when their trucks collided two miles south of here. Sabin was thrown 20 feet and Gordon, with a head injury, was rushed to a Des Moines hospital.
Sub zero temperatures and icy roads hamper operations in northeast Iowa. Many country schools closed until warmer weather melts treacherous ice. Officials said temperatures have milder but road conditions remain dangerous for travel.
Washington D C nomination notes indicate Judge Charles B Faris of St Louis to the eighth circuit court of appeals, while Seth Thomas of Fort Dodge Iowa is expected to be advanced to the appellate bench as Faris retires.

Forrest Sayington aged 13 died in Ellsworth hospital after being overcome by illuminating gas escaping from a broken main near his Iowa Falls home. The body was taken to Wood Funeral Home in Iowa Falls.
Moldy earth from the Richard Tieck basement was sent to Iowa State College at Ames for analysis after five Tieck family members and four others fell ill with a damp condition resembling mine, and all are recovering.
The 74 year old Walter Case known for his moonshine was found burned to death near his shack eight miles northwest of Grand River. Alva Lelman, a local farmer, spotted the fire and located the body.
In Davenport near Big Rock about twenty students were startled when an unidentified man opened the school door startling the teacher and pupils. The man backed onto the porch and collapsed dead shortly after.
Mrs Lara M Chapin of Tipton files a 10000 damage suit in Davenport district court after a World’s Fair trip ending with her buggy struck by an automobile. She claims permanent personal injuries to herself and notes she was loading her children into the buggy when the crash occurred.
Plans move to start work Monday February 4 at the Grace Hill quarry in Washington county as a three month relief effort. Fifty to seventy five workers will be paid 20 cents an hour for up to 30 hours weekly to surface nine miles of county roads with rock from the quarry.
Congress took a breathing spell in Washington with the House expected to return next week to work on the bonus and the Senate to take up the proposal of adherence to the world court before addressing measures already passed by the House.

Edward F. Riley, 74, longtime Crawfordsville resident, died at his home after a brief illness. Born October 30, 1860, he was a painter and paper-hanger, married Olive Franklin in 1887, and leaves four daughters and eight grandchildren. Funeral services are pending at the L. A. Jones funeral home in Washington.
Ezra Hochstedler, eldest son of Mr and Mrs Manasa Hochstedler, was seriously injured while helping shoe horses at the Joe T Miller farm near Kalona. A horse kicked him in the head fracturing his rib and he was taken to an Iowa City hospital where his condition was described as very critical.
New Jersey January 26 The state will tear to pieces every alibi offered by Bruno Richard Hauptmann to prove no link to the Lindbergh kidnapping and murder. Prosecution counsel declared next Monday will feature a searching cross examination.
Paul Johnson of Conesville will spend the weekend at the Earl Crossett residence, a short social visit noted in local society listings.

A special District of Columbia grand jury, first in ten years, is summoned to start Feb. 6 to investigate graft charges tied to a $4 million PWA canal project in Texas and possibly other PWA programs. District Attorney Leslie Gavenett directs hearings on eight to ten officials amid Interior Secretary Ickes anti graft push.
The United States government began an inquiry into the Ward liner Mohawk sinking near Des Moines. Three known dead and thirteen missing are reported after the Talisman rammed the Mohawk. surviving officers, crew, and passengers are being interviewed.
