Police probe a break in at 731 South Fourth Avenue Camden New Jersey reported Thursday night. Items missing include two televisions a shotgun and an antique grinder though some details await confirmation. A basement safe was pried open the report notes.
Assistant federal energy chief Roger W. Sant defended the Ford administration energy package at the Iowa Energy Conference saying self sufficiency by 1985 is achievable. He warned fuel price increases will rise about 10 cents a gallon this year and urged alternatives to driving while noting rebates would offset higher costs.
Four teenagers from East Moline died when their car was hit by a Rock Island Lines passenger train on the east edge of Moline, police said. The victims were Nina Caldwell 18 Angie Neels 18 Victor Neels 16 and Walter Neels Jr. 17. A fifth occupant Melvin Lee 28 survived in satisfactory condition. drivership could not be determined.
The CDC says flu and pneumonia killed 680 in the United States last week. The epidemic spread to the West Coast for the first time this winter and deaths exceeded projections for a third straight week in the Southeast. For the week ending January 18, deaths were 136 above the 544 expected. Dr. Lawrence Corry noted improvement from the prior week’s 754 deaths.
Iowa Democrat Rep. Berkley Bedell says comprehensive tax reform could curb inflation without boosting it and would target relief to lower and middle income Americans. He also urges energy diversification, potential gasoline rationing, and shifts in agriculture policy while criticizing seniority and urging reform.

Des Moines United Press International says 17 Iowa veterans of the 1898 Spanish American War remain active in the Iowa Spanish American War Veterans group. Nationally about 1,200 veterans continue active involvement with the national group.
Prisons officials accuse 20 year olds Ly Kruse and Ray Estabrook of assaulting 19 year old Ward Fuller in Muscatine County jail. They allegedly forced Fuller to perform deep breathing until unconscious, kicked him, burned him with a cigarette, and tied a towel around his neck to a cell bar. A fellow prisoner reported the mistreatment after his December release.
The White House calls reports of a U S Middle East invasion force bunkum and says no divisions are planned for the region. Ron Nessen and James R Schlesinger emphasize there is no truth to the story. Pentagon sources say three Army divisions are slated for NATO duty, not the Middle East.
DES MOINES UPI reports the Senate Judiciary Committee will begin substantive action on a major 1975 priority: revisions to Iowa's criminal code. A six member subcommittee met at night to press for a Monday vote, with public hearing slated for Feb 10 and debate on Feb 17.
