Morning frost plunges to twenty degrees below zero at Chilcote and Cook's. Residents endure freezing conditions while coal and ice vendors profit. A family heads to Arkansas for refuge from the cold. Mrs. S. C. Boyer, aged eighty five, dies in Sigourney. funeral plans and interment in Elm Grove Cemetery. she leaves four children and two sons.
Mrs. Guilmot wife of Eli Guilmot living north of the city was adjudged insane by the Commissioners of Insanity and sent to the asylum for treatment this evening. She has four children aged nine months to almost ten years, and denies her motherhood claiming the children are not hers amid bank money delusions. Her husband notes periods of lucidity but spells render her nonresponsive. she has previously been sent to the asylum and returned cured.
Iowa City on January 23 special report: Miss Annie Holets sues neighbor Joseph Sirovy for 5000 alleging a promised marriage in 1895. She seeks the fortune as solace for a wounded heart amid his recent inheritance of 5000 after reaching majority.
On the Chicagua river the ice harvest has commenced. A train load will be shipped tonight for Chas Clifton. The force aims to rush operations while the cold lasts. Ice is harvested at Trites park where a telegraph office and stationary engine pull ice from the river into a car in twelve minutes. About fifty cars per day are planned. Ice thickness is ten inches. Besides Washington, the company furnishes ice to Burlington Oskaloosa Winfield Hedrick and Crawfordsville.
Special to The Evening Journal reports a forecast for Iowa: generally fair tonight and Tuesday. Temperatures not as cold.
Saturday a family left Washington for Arkansas fearing for their welfare. The Denile Cooley family and relatives J Db Sutton Keeley Sutton travel in a covered wagon with five horses and a small stove. Since departure no word has been heard, and weather changed to extreme cold raising concerns they may need shelter along the road.
At an adjourned meeting in Smouse’s hall the county anti saloon league organized with a constitution. KE Brockway was elected president, with Samuel Gardner B F Brown H F Samson J T Matthews and W B P Moothart as vice presidents and Charles Keck as secretary and A Anderson as treasurer. Local precinct vice presidents were appointed to spread the movement. The chair pledged vigorous county organization to abolish the saloon. Crawfordsville Iowa January 25 special.
Iowa City fire at three o clock morning destroyed Alderman P J Regans fence factory with damage around 4000 dollars fully insured. Witnesses reported men seen leaving the building before the blaze. Visitors from a Burlington theatrical outing included Charles Kelley Carson Fulton Orville Eyestone Joe St Clair Ralph Lytle Ralph Manners Walter Arthur and Harry Rupp.
Burlington Iowa January 23 special report C L Masdin celebrated the free silver issue by naming his newborn son William Jennings Bryan Masdin He received a personal thanks letter from William Jennings Bryan enclosing a crisp 100 silver certificate to mark the honor.
A note explains a one and a half hour delay due to ad rush and job work. The town shows strong interest in checkers with boards in many offices. J. J. Davis of Chicago visited, recalling his dry goods days twenty years ago near the corner where I. Klein now has a brick building.
