Sen. Estes Kefauver announced plans to enter the New Hampshire and California primaries and indicated he will seek the Democratic presidential nomination. He stated he is in the race to the finish and did not await President Truman’s decision on reelection, prompting some administration Democrats to back a Kefauver move.
Washington reports the army will keep its rule banning service for women with children under 18. Mrs Lorentt Thompson of Newark N J faces loss of her major commission in the reserves after having a baby and appeals to Assistant Defense Secretary Anna M Rosenberg. Rosenberg says the regulation will not change and cites navy and air force agreement.
The VFW dance group holds its regular dance at the VEW hall Friday evening with the Ogden Frazier band of Iowa City providing music. The event is part of a series of activities planned by the local post in observance of National VIEW week with more plans to be announced.

Funeral services for Mrs Nancy Leeper of Nevada will be held at 10 30 a m Friday at Marsh funeral home in Keota with burial in the Keota cemetery She died at the home of her son Harvey Leeper after a visit to the area Born June 28 1877
Funeral services for Mrs. John Carter were held in Wellman at 2 PM with Rev. C. Bissinger officiating. Survived by husband, son Rev. LeRoy Carter of Muscatine, stepdaughter Mrs Clarence Bower of Des Moines, five grandchildren, and a sister in Colorado. Burial in Wellman cemetery.

Numbing cold eased in Iowa and the Dakotas as transportation slowly resumed with rail and road clearance. Pierre SD saw a passenger train return. Des Moines tenants reopened an airport after ice clearing. Temperatures stayed near zero across the region.
Four hundred forty one union mechanics failed to report for work at Northwestern Airlines overtime division in Holman Field St Paul starting a slowdown that caused flight cancellations across the NWA system. Ramp mechanics returned to work and operations were restored to normal with the slowdown spreading to overhaul building as over one third of 1105 workers were absent.

Edwin Dale Shaull of Lisbon admitted breaking into three local establishments and stealing at least 85 dollars. Police say he confessed to taking 40 dollars from the McManara filling station safe and 45 dollars from B F Goodrich Co, plus a jewelry store break in at Ladora.
Secretary of State Melvin D. Synhorst released a photostatic copy of a cancelled check to prove he bought his own television set. The Republican official presented the document after state Senator A. E. Augustine accused high state officials of receiving television sets for services rendered.
Moose lodge members prepare a Friday fish fry at the north side lodge rooms with dancing afterwards. Tickets cost 1.50 for adults and 75 cents for children. Repairs include a new kitchen and improved service, plus a TV set for member use. The club rooms open daily from noon to 4 pm and evenings on Tue Wed Fri and Sat.
In Tunisia at Kelibia Arab Nationalists attacked an outpost prompting French militiamen to request air and tank support. French forces recaptured Te boulba as Nationalists seized it yesterday. Warplanes were called in for the first time as fighting from January 16 escalated. Reinforcements from Algeria including Foreign Legionnaires native infantry and Spahis arrived to bolster garrisons.
The House Expenditures Committee unanimously approved President Truman’s plan to reorganize the scandal‑shaken Internal Revenue Bureau. The proposal would replace 64 presidentially appointed tax collectors with up to 25 civil service district commissioners, with only the chief commissioner named by the president. The plan would take effect unless vetoed by March 14 by either house or the Senate.
The Iowa Conservation Commission reports 192 deer killed in 1951, down from 350 in 1950. Vehicles caused 122 deaths, hunters 37 illegal kills, dogs eight, and 25 by miscellaneous accidents. Fifteen counties reported fewer deaths, with Pottawattamie leading at 19 and Woodbury, Plymouth, and Alamakkee among top counties.
Washington county teachers are invited to enroll in a weekly 15 week biology fundamentals course for college credit to be taught by Warnsons college in the county superintendent of schools office. enroll by Monday noon, first class Monday evening January 28 at 7. rural and town teachers may attend with fees of 10 dollars plus a 5 dollar matriculation fee.
William Henry Hagie Jr. 45 died Thursday night at his home 1415 East Third Street after a heart attack. He had been ill two years. Funeral 2 p.m. Saturday January 26 at Jones Funeral Home with Dr Reed in charge and Crawfordsville cemetery burial. Survivors: wife Alice Lee, three children Gerald Lee 12 Merlin Duane 8 Janet Elaine 7, his father William Hagie Sr, two sisters Reba Hagie and Blanche Lamb. He lived in Washington nine years and worked for Swanson’s Grocery and Railway Express. He was born November 18, 1906 in Crawfordsville and married March 25, 1953 in Rock Island, Alabama. He was a Modern Woodman member and Methodist.
The Baptist church held its regular monthly meeting with the Jennie Adams circle in charge. Rev. Earl Longfellow led devotions and singing. January joining members were recognized along with guests Virgene Stewart and Mr. and Mrs. Lester L. Krabill, whose Mexico trip film inspired the talk.
In New York, Kyleen Cronin, 59, Talullah Bankhead's former maid secretary, was convicted on three counts of second degree larceny for raising expense checks. She received one to two years on each count, to be suspended, after sobbing as Judge Harold A. Stephens handed down the sentence.

The Nepalese embassy reports a 24 hour revolt in Kathmandu ended with most rebels seized or fled to southern Nepal. Government offices including the secretariat radio station arsenal telephone exchange and airport are back under control. The ambassador said calm is restored in the capital.

The government authorized retail price increases of 50 to 222 for five 1952 GM passenger cars including Chevrolet Pontiac Oldsmobile Buick and Cadillac effective immediately. Price ceilings for Hudson passenger cars rose by 90 to 1423, with GM models ranging from 1402 for the lowest price Chevrolet to 5205 for the Cadillac top price.
TOKYO reports a Communist radio broadcast claiming United States planes violated Manchurian territory on Jan 19 and 20. It alleges seven bombs were dropped at Masienkon, Liaotung, injuring livestock and destroying three houses, with additional incursions at Pi Tung and Antung and reconnaissance by large American formations.

Cain demanded a reappraisal of military height rules after reports three six foot six basketball players were rejected for being too tall. The Presbyterian church hosted the second in a series of Family Nights on Wednesday evening. After dinner Leonard Booy led the devotional service and Mrs John Lemmon guided a study from Mission to America by Truman B Douglas. Last week Harvey Davis led devotions and Russell Bannister led the study.
About 225 Wayne feed dealers and their wives attended a district meeting at the Washington YMCA Wednesday evening. The principal address was given by Bob Day of Omaha, Allied Mills sales manager. Trophies were awarded for outstanding 1951 sales. Mr and Mrs Jim Greenfield attended and are associated with Jim and Don's market, Wayne dealers.

Highs range 5 to 15 northeast and 10 to 20 southwest with lows from zero to 16 above. Friday highs 2 to 30 northeast and 30 to 35 southwest. Saturday outlook includes light snow and a chance of freezing rain in the southern half.
