Washington residents are urged to cooperate on Visitors Day by keeping parking spaces on and near the square free for thousands of visitors tomorrow. The event draws interest for miles and highlights the city’s enthusiasm in the large trading area surrounding it.
Washington stores pay tribute to outsider guests this week while praising trade from Washington. Plans are underway for a dedicated Washington day honoring Washington residents.
Downtown crowds will welcome guests as locals travel to town to enjoy values offered across the city. The committee aims to show Washington as a host community with the slogan Washington Is Coming Back First.
Crawfordsville Jan 24 Funeral services will be held at two o'clock Thursday afternoon at the Salem church in the Welsh neighborhood for John R. Davis 57 who died at his home in Crawfordsville yesterday. Burial will be in Cambrian cemetery. He was born Jan 22 1877 and lived in the Welsh neighborhood until moving to Crawfordsville four years ago. He was an elder in Salem Presbyterian for 22 years and long taught a Sunday school class. Surviving are brothers Evan H and Hugh B Davis and sisters Miss Lydia and Miss Jennie Davis. sister Mrs Hannah Davis died twenty years ago.
The Washington sophomores faced Pleasant Plain in two tight contests at Pleasant Plain High School, winning one game and losing the other in a split doubleheader.
Washington, Burlington junior college battled to a 36 34 Washington win as Jimmy Wells sank two late field goals. Burlington led 16 12 after the first quarter and 28 21 at halftime before Wells sparked a closing rally to seal the victory.

Doctors say concussion and possible skull fracture. her husband Mr Howard escaped with minor injuries. The couple, 57, formerly of Wayland, were en route to visit Washington and Wayland friends, including Sam Bergh and the Schmitts.
In Ottumwa on January 24 the federal grand jury in the public works administration inquiry held morning consultations with U.S. Attorney Row Calflesh and Atty. Gen. Cummings special assistant William Hoover. No witnesses were called. Marshalltown state chair H. M. Cooper awaited room calls while P. F. Hopkins, state engineer, spent yesterday with the jury. Calflesh indicated a decision on summoning Lieutenant Governor N. G. Kraschel has not been reached.
Forty eight citizens signed for shares within twenty four hours after the Savines and Loan idea was submitted to Washington men. Total shares subscribed reach 46450 with 4650 paid now. Temporary president named and charter sought. officers include Dr FE Stutsman as President Ralph C Scott Vice President and C V Crull Secretary. Charter expected in thirty days and aim to $106000 in subscriptions. Local interest may boost building activity and invest surplus funds.

ST. PAUL Jan 24 As the 177th hour since the kidnapping of Edward G Bremer passed it was learned that a band of at least four men are bargaining with Adolph Bremer father of the victim for his freedom. It is believed Bremer is being held within an hours ride of the twin cities. It is believed another contact will have to be made before the ransom is paid. Suspense grew as it was believed plans had possibly miscarried.
Community boosters along primary road No 2 between Davenport and Omaha push to have the route designated a federal highway. Muscatine chamber of commerce official met Washington ministers to advance the plan, citing two unpaved gaps in Louisa County and western Iowa.
Washington January 24 The White House signaled a compromise on the Civil Works Administration crisis as it said the CWA would end May 1 while Roosevelt would seek 356 million dollars to cover CWA operations to that date and 500 million for next year’s relief. The plan aims to place remaining work on the payroll after May first and ease congressional opposition to severing CWA employees from public payroll.
