Waterloo and Oskaloosa items report loss of 15 original song lyrics by songwriter J Hindal after a fire at Casebeer Heights. Oskaloosa city council rejects a $2,679 back salary claim and reinstatement for former Police Chief Howard Allgood who was replaced two years ago.
Kenneth H. Kelley a 20 year old State University of Iowa sophomore from Milwaukee lay in University hospital with a bullet in his head after telling officials he attended classes Tuesday following an attempt to end his life Monday night. He said an argument with his girlfriend led him to his room where he fired a .22 caliber bullet into the front of his head with a borrowed gun.
Ashes of Dr. D W Morehouse 64 president of Drake University will be placed in the wall of the Drake Municipal Observatory on Waveland golf course. Funeral services at University Church of Christ at 2 p m Friday followed by cremation and placement of the urn in the observatory. The observatory was dedicated to him when completed in 1921.
Earlham farmer Swan Blomquist, 71, was hospitalized with two broken legs after a blasting incident on his farm. He told attendants he recalls little of the event, believing he was straddling a log when the blast from potash and sugar went off prematurely.
Roger Arnold almost four, son of Mr and Mrs William Arnold of Eldora, remains asleep twenty seven days at Eldora Memorial hospital. He is in encephalitis sleeping sickness following a fall on October 27 at the Whitten Sunday school.
District Judge Dean Person said he believes Mrs. Mabel Albright, 22, a confessed forger, belongs on the relief rolls rather than in jail after hearing her story of misfortune. She pleaded guilty to forging and admitted passing a dozen worthless checks to support her two children. She said she was divorced in Rockwell City.
Jan 23 Des Moines reports Representative Joseph N. Wagner introduces a bill to require two half hour weekly lessons on Americanism in all Iowa schools from kindergarten to college. The 13 page measure targets subversive activities and cites the declaration of independence.
Anton Brigson of Waterloo has appealed to the Iowa Supreme Court his conviction and a 60 day jail sentence for drunken driving. The case was filed January 23 and reported by U.P. from Des Moines.
The Iowa Senate approved a 60 percent tax assessment bill by 48 to 1 after 23 minutes of debate. The companion House measure, limiting municipal bonded debt to five percent of assessed value, passed 96 to 7. One senator voted against the 60 percent bill. another did not vote. An amendment allowing up to 25 percent millage increases in 1941 and 1942 was added to protect government functions.
Chairman Robert Doughton of the House Ways and Means Committee said he will introduce a bill within a day or two to raise the debt limit and tax U S securities. No fixed future debt cap is set, but a figure around 65 billion dollars has been discussed.
Snow early today in Washington left sidewalks treacherous as ice lay beneath fresh cover. Several people slipped with minor injuries reported, including a man who fell twice while walking downtown and another who sat down on a porch walk without injury beyond dignity.
An airliner crashed about 2 miles southwest of Lambert field early today killing Chief Pilot P. T. Scott of New York and passenger J. F. Mott of Kansas City. John G. Winant, 51, former New Hampshire governor and ILO director, is expected to be named ambassador to Great Britain succeeding Joseph P. Kennedy. Winant was first Social Security Board chairman under FDR in 1935 and is a prominent Republican.

Charles A. Lindbergh told the House Foreign Affairs Committee that even with Britain’s aid bill the war could not be won without possible German collapse. He urged noninvolvement and said Europe might be more peaceful if the United States stayed out of European wars. He argued peace is not achievable by taking a limited role and urged a broader peace plan.

Sheriff H M Putnam received a letter from Keokuk Chief E C McPherson asking about three men who stole a car at Crawfordsville and left it in Keokuk. The trio is believed to have stolen cars in Minnesota Vinton and Cedar Rapids before leaving vehicles along the way including Troy Missouri.
