Instrumental solo contest draws 400 students to Washington
More than 400 junior high and elementary performers from 17 schools travel to Washington for Everetts Music Co sponsored instrumental solo contest. Morning session begins 8 30 a m with a 1 15 p m start after lunch. Judges include Robert Jones from the University of Iowa and four public school music supervisors.

Mrs J H Jones and Dr Max L Smith named co chairmen for the Washington County Heart Fund drive. The drive opens February 16 with Dr Smith in charge of the city of Washington and Mrs Jones directing all other areas. Washington Adult Education program pre registration set
Registration for the 1964 Washington Adult Education sessions will be held Thursday evening at the local high school. Most classes cost 7.50 dollars, with the investment course at 5 dollars and the Understanding Teen Agers course free. The program includes an I Q test, aptitude and interest assessments and discussions on colleges scholarships and teen age issues led by George Cordes.

Neutral nations back U S five point arms plan at Geneva
At the Geneva disarmament conference neutrals voiced strong support for President Johnson's five point plan to freeze strategic arms and halt fissionable material production. Delegates from eight neutrals urged concrete negotiations with the U S and Russia, while cautioning speed on broad disarmament and noting some vagueness in the Soviet seven point plan. Foster planned further talks with Soviet envoy Tsarapkin as Western powers push for rapid, expert-led negotiations.

YMCA Week Observed As Washington Celebrates 38th Year
The 38th year of operation in the present Y marks National YMCA Week with events across Washington. Activities include a Men's Fellowship Breakfast, Air Rifle, Volleyball and Fitness programs, High School Basketball, Farm Institute, swim for Trainable Mentally Retarded Children, Adult Basketball, Family Night, and various youth leagues through Friday. Saturday features a staff meeting, gym and swim classes, Bean Feed, Junior High Basketball, and a dance party. Sunday is YMCA Sunday with Youth Sunday observances in churches. The kickoff for membership enrollment is Tuesday January 28, and Quarterly Award Night occurs Saturday February 1 with Y activites awards presented by the Y's Men Club.

Tickets go on sale for The Music Man at Washington Ys Men
The 21st Washington production of The Music Man went on sale with general admission tickets exchangeable for reserved seats at Osincup Drug Store after February 8 or at the theater doors on performance nights. Adult tickets are 1 50 and 12 and under pay 1.00. The show runs February 12 to 15 at the Washington High School Auditorium with a cast of over 50 and direction by Vernon Feuerhelm and Dave Elder and Richard McCleery. Rehearsals continue at the old Advanced-Rosg building on West Madison.

Fatally Shot in Ollie Tavern
Norman Caskey 37 of Williamsburg held in Keokuk County Jail after a 10:30 a.m. Tuesday shooting in Ollie tavern that killed Rex Ruggles 24, who left behind two daughters. Caskey allegedly exchanged words with the victim before firing a 9mm Belgian revolver and then surrendering to the bartender. Ruggles worked at Amana and was the son of Otto and (now Illinois residents) Mrs. Ruggles. A Red Cross chapter board meeting is planned Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the chapter office.
