The government redirected steel capacity to defense use reducing civilian supply and imposed strict tungsten allocations to reserve more for emergency production. The steel order amends a prior rule that guaranteed non defense consumers 75 to 95 percent of normal output, now cut to 65 percent in cases like hot rolled bars for ammunition.
Jim Kurtz and Nancy Burham were elected king and queen of the Flunkers Ball held Friday night in the Lincoln school gym to celebrate the end of the first semester at Washington High School. The junior class sponsored the dance with themed decorations and gold dance caps as crowns. Doug Furr, junior class president, presided.
Passersby on East Washington Street saw a noticeable chimney blaze at the 0. L. Dayton residence 1009 East Washington Street. Mrs. Dayton calmly noted the chimney was releasing soot and no damage occurred. The fire department was not summoned.
Wayne Putnam of Iowa City president of the Iowa Junior Chamber of Commerce will speak at the local Jaycee meeting tonight. He will outline the state organization work and ongoing statewide projects. The Pines hosts the 7 o clock gathering.

Des Moines area forecast shows increasing cloudiness and warmer by afternoon with winds. Highs reach 28 to 30. Tonight remains cloudy and warmer with diminishing winds and lows 20 to 30. Tuesday turns colder with northerly winds and light snow flurries northern Iowa. Highs 20 to 25 north and 30 to 40 south. Partly cloudy and much colder Tuesday night and Wednesday. lows 5 to 10. Highs Wednesday 15 to 20.
Washington county crews reported most highways in Keokuk Washington and Louisa counties are snowpacked and slippery in spots while patrols urge caution. In the city intersections are sanded though some slick patches remain and travel is difficult for drivers and pedestrians after a weekend snowfall.
Ralph W. Thompson 68, Washington businessman, died Saturday in a Bremerton hospital after a year of illness. Funeral services tentatively set for 3:30 p.m. Thursday Jan 25 at Jones funeral home with burial in Elm Grove cemetery. He was born June 2 1882 near Ainsworth and spent most of his life in Washington county. Survivors include daughter Mrs Dan Brindley of Washington son Robert of Bremerton four grandchildren and sister Mrs R H Pemble of Molalla Oregon. He served as secretary to the local school board and Rotary for 25 years and belonged to Masons Eastern Star White Shrine and the Methodist Church. He also helped lead the Washington Federal Savings and Loan board and was active in music groups.
A farm home south of Prairieburg, Linn County, Iowa, burned Sunday killing Wilma Geinapp 29 and her daughters Alice 12 and Donna nine months old. Husband William Geinapp escaped as smoke overpowered the family. cause may be an overheated stove per firefighters.
Defendants Jewel Tea Co and Richard Pollard have filed a notice of appeal in the case brought by J. H. Simpson & Gon in this court house.
Clerks in the county treasurer’s office warn of a last minute rush for auto license plates as the backlog lingers. The latest non commercial figures show 4211 plates issued, down 230 from the same day last year, with only four or five mail applications daily and a looming long line on January 31 if backlog isn’t cleared.
P Barth veteran Phillips 16 tank wagon operator announces a new service station at 1422 East Washington Street. Work has taken months with his son W J Barth and Keith Williams as attendants. It becomes the third Phillips 66 station in town operated by Ray Reeves and Leo J Sueppel. Barth has twenty years with Phillips Petroleum.
Vivian Luers Washington High School historian and advisor Wilda Busby attended the state Future Homemakers of America executive council meeting held Friday and Saturday along with other state officers advisors and four members of the state board for vocational homemaking education. The sessions at the high school and YMCA covered plans for the state leadership conference national participation and the FHA handbook. Luers chaired the Saturday morning session breakfast and luncheon and led the history and records section of the handbook.
George R. Yeager 79 prominent Crawfordsville resident died Sunday after a heart attack. Funeral to be held Tuesday at 2 pm at Shermans Funeral Home with Rev. Clare H. Boos officiating. Burial in Crawfordsville Cemetery. He operated a Crawfordsville meat market 35 years and was active in the community. Born November 22, 1871 near Crawfordsville, married Margaret S. Sherwood December 1, 1898. Survived by sister Vera A. Yeager of Des Moines and sister-in-law Mrs Gormley of Seattle. two brothers preceded him in death.
Five tank tipped Allied task forces penetrated Western Korea renewing a reconnaissance in force along a 25 mile sector. Wonju airstrip was recaptured and held as columns moved through Osan Kumyangjang and Sehon before returning to lines. Fifth Air Force supported with raids burning Kumyangjang.
A family potluck at the Methodist church opens Scout Week on February 1 at 6 30 pm with a court of honor led by Bob Everetts. Other events include Scout Citizen Day and a Sunday union church service on February 11 at the Presbyterian church.

Margot a two year old spider monkey from Nicaragua joins the Lloyd Marek household five miles north of Washington. The pet easily climbs and shrieks, prompting advice to chain or leash the animal as it behaves like a curious child with five hands. Margot was tamed in Nicaragua and brought back by Jim Lawlor.
Mrs Ralph Ashby 83 died early Sunday at her farm home near Pilotburg Iowa Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2 pm at the Powell funeral home Wellman with Rev Walter Smith Rev Lloyd Bauer and Rev Donald Bissinger officiating Burial will be in Pilotburg cemetery She was born April 3 1867 in Fort Scott Kansas daughter of James A and Leatha Moore Yeakle family moved to Iowa in 1892 She married Ralph M Ashby Nov 30 1892 at St Scott Kansas Survived by seven children James Dubuque Charles near Washington Eben Chicago R W Emmetsburg Percy Miriam and Leatha all at home Four brothers and two sisters preceded in death
In Washington a new promotion for the March of Dimes campaign unfolds as baker Paul Fern bakes a large cake. Residents are invited to decorate the cake with dimes and submit estimates of the total number of coins. On January 31 a contest awards three prizes to the closest guesses.
Leon Beatty American Legion post plans a Mardi Gras at the Legion hall on February 5 directed by Margaret Evans. The event features dancing to the Jimmy Dennis orchestra and a 10:30 floor show in a nightclub setting. Tickets are $1, on sale at Modern Appliance and through Legion members.
Mrs Paul Maske 78 died Saturday in Mercy hospital Iowa City where she had been a patient since August. Funeral at 2 PM Tuesday at Kalona Methodist Church with Rev Laurence Jones officiating. Burial in Sharon Hill cemetery. Born January 21 1873 in Kalona she married Paul Maske in 1899. Survived by three sisters Alice Mehaffey Kalona Pearl Von Draska Victor Nellie Huff Des Moines and brother George Kalona plus nieces and nephews.
The Masonic lodge at the temple here will present work in the third degree on Wednesday evening. Members and interested brethren are urged to attend and support the lodge’s ceremonial program.
The Iowa House voted to investigate alleged irregularities in the office of the state secretary of agriculture over licensing of the salt base anti freez P 60. A five man Republican committee was named to conduct the probe while the interim committee hearings may be reopened. Secretary Clyde Spry revoked the P 60 license after interim recommendations.
Gen Omar N Bradley told the Senate preparedness committee that the United States faces long lasting world tensions and that national defense requires drafting 18-year-olds under a universal military training program. He warned against complacency and emphasized Canadian cooperation in air defense.
Reverend Walter Smith told a Sunday union church service at United Presbyterian Church that a crisis from communist pressure requires greatness. He warned civilization faces a lop sided path with material power outpacing spiritual growth and urged all to strive for greater humanity in this hour of confusion.
