Des Moines column reports that December payments from the federal social security board total $13,036 to 289 Iowa claimants. Average payment was $45.11, about 3.5 percent of each claimant's salary up to the claim. Since Jan 1, 1937, $121,123 has been paid on 2,979 Iowa claims.
Don Turner 38 a Curlew town basketball player and poultry dealer collapsed during warmups in Curl ew gymnasium before a scheduled game with Rembrandt. Coroner R J Brink ruled heart attack the cause. no inquest planned.
In Des Moines a town house page learns parliamentary language as Chief Clerk A. C. Gustafson sends the youth to a house committee to see if a quorum exists. Members teased him with the question Is Mr Quorum here as the pace long after the departure.
A State University of Iowa program will air nationwide on February 25 in a fictional dramatization of The Story of Vitamin K. Researchers led by Dr. Harry P. Smith from the university medical laboratories developed the tale. Vitamin K is cited as valuable in gall bladder surgery and related cures, and is described as being derived from alfalfa.
Federal Ranger Ed Devis and three wardens helped stranded deer on Deer Island near Lansing. Two deer freed themselves, but a large four-point buck remained unable to rise. After careful maneuvering, they roped the buck, brought him to shore, and released him.
Roy Franklin aged 63 fell 40 feet from a metal smokestack while repairing it at the L. H. Kurtz Co. building. He was hoisting with a block and tackle when the stack collapsed. His son Jack, 17, called for help and firemen used an aerial ladder to rescue him. Franklin sustained a fractured left arm and possible internal injuries.
A women's group in Iowa City circulates a petition calling for an immediate water rate cut. About 2000 signatures are expected and the petition will be presented to the city council at the February 3 meeting. Current charge is 1.28 dollars per 300 cubic feet, requested drop to 0.85 dollars per 300 cubic feet.
Des Moines invites Frances Perkins and Henry A. Wallace to address the National Farm Institute on Feb. 17 and 18. Both Cabinet members, noted labor and industrial figures, will speak at the institute gathering in Des Moines next month.
State Senator Howard Baldwin of Dubuque 34 may push an anti alimony bill in the Iowa legislature. Baldwin one of the youngest lawmakers and noted for looks was married during Christmas holidays.
The 70 piece high school band directed by Maurice Brayton performed a varied program before a good crowd. Highlights included Fillmore's Noble Men, Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite, Fulton’s Suite Espagnole, and the reader a clever Three Trees. Soloists and ensembles received strong applause as the band displayed rhythmic strength and polished execution.
Regional PWA director R A Radford reports Iowa will see thirty waterworks projects costing over 1.25 million dollars funded with Public Works Administration aid. Projects include Mason City 121000 and Winterset 260000 water systems plus many smaller town works in Ames Harcourt Dubuque and Boone among others.
Des Moines reports six o'clock temperature at 42 degrees above zero. The bulletin notes Tampa Florida also recorded a six o'clock reading above zero, reflecting a warm start to the day.
A strong northwest wind will plunge temperatures to ten degrees below zero by Monday morning across Iowa. Federal meteorologist Charles D. Reed said today that temperatures will fall tonight and continue Sunday, contrasting with today’s milder 15 to 36 degree averages. Council Bluffs yesterday reached 54 degrees as Charles City logged a 16 degree high. Tonight readings are expected around five degrees in the northwest up to 29 in the southeast with light snow in the east.
A family night at the Methodist church features a 6 30 covered dish dinner and EF Don Bancroft as speaker. Washington county Methodists are urged to attend with all church and Sunday school members invited and asked to bring a dish and table service. The Ladies Aid will supply coffee and sugar, while the Junior Missionary society offers a candy sale.
Dow and Bancroft will speak at the West Chester Methodist church at 11 on Sunday January 22. A male quartet will perform two numbers during the event.
Des Moines Jan 21 Gov George Wilson approves a state planning board tenancy committee plan. A two year study yields recommendations including tax on capital gains from farm land sales, protection of tenant tenure during crop failures, revised foreclosure procedures, abolition of deficiency judgments, differential farm land taxation, improved landlord tenant relations, and compensation for unexhausted improvements and damage.
Sixteen carriers and substitutes gathered for the 33rd annual Journal Carrier party at the Congress hotel. Paul Dodder won the 29th gold watch for outstanding service and celebrated his birthday with twin brothers Bob and Dick as substitutes. James Bey took the second prize of $14 and Bob Crosnett earned $5. Nine of 16 regulars received a special $3 award. all others got a silver dollar for faithful service.
Dr. i. D. C. Barrett, director, announces a vaccination drive in Washington and the county for late next week after a itinerant grinder Jill Richardson exposed people to smallpox. Exposed residents are urged to vaccinate. Immunization rates are low among adults, school children, and preschool children.
Dr. Carl F. Jordan warns no mallpox cases in cities visited by itinerant salesman Jim Richardson who traveled from Coynett Bluffs to Iowa City. Richardson was admitted to University Hospital in Iowa City with mallpox in a highly contagious state after a two week incubation period. He rode by train with stops at Patefield Mt. Pleasant Washington and Columbus Junction before Iowa City. An earlier illness was misread as influenza.
Adults and children were urged to attend vaccination clinics at 15 county sites starting next Thursday. Health officers will notify through schools about vaccination times, and doctors are urged to watch for cases, especially chickenpox in persons over 15.
Rebels massed along a 100 mile front pressing toward Madrid as Gen. Francisco Franco bombed Barcelona. Eighteen German planes hit the city in four raids with at least 17 dead in initial strikes. Loyalist defense claimed one neutralized attacker. Nationalists reportedly broke through Pass Igualada, opening paths toward Barcelona.
The Chicago local of the radio artists union voted unanimously for a proposed national strike that would suspend numerous network programs. One thousand two hundred members in New York also approved the strike unanimously, with other locals set to vote in Los Angeles tonight and San Francisco Sunday.
Berlin January 21 Chancellor Hitler dismissed Dr Hjalmar Schacht earlier and removed Dr Frederick Dreyer from the banks vice presidency and Dr Ernst Huelse from the directorate. The moves marked a second blow in two days to the orthodox banking element in the Reich.
Des Moines court refused former Attorney General Edward L. OConner a rehearing of his $2,100 back salary case seeking pay under the 1937 salary reduction act later ruled invalid by the state supreme court.

Webber former attorney for the Federal Land Bank of Omaha was filed in district court Chester W Whitmore leading the charge with order approved by four district judges including GC Wennerstram Webber faces accusations of withholding 11786 89 from clients with individual amounts ranging from 147 to over 2000 Clients listed include the Omaha Federal Land Bank and Prudential Insurance Company The hearing is scheduled for February 6 Webber recently resigned as assistant Wapello County attorney after serving over a year and had been practicing with his brother Bailey Webber
Tentative arrangements call for clinics at Washington Wellman Kalona Riverside Highland Center Haskins Ainsworth Crawfordsville Shiloh school Jackson Center White Oak Seventy-six center Brighton and West Chester. They start Thursday January 26 and end February 3 with times to be announced early next week, Dr. Barrett said.
