Cedar Rapids reports police officer Eddie Stearns wed Carlo Marie Rhinehart in Rockford Illinois on October 17 1981. The disclosure follows a long kept secret marriage in a column noting Iowa links.
Waterloo District Judge A B Loverjoy revoked a $300 fine against Clyde Bittner for illegal possession of gambling devices after patrol officers found two slot machines and punchboards in his car. Bittner, 40, Waterloo, was apprehended by highway patrolmen.
Cedar Rapids police ruled out drowning after Ernest Lane called in to report tracking rabbits and falling through thin ice on the Cedar River. Lane crawled to the bank by grabbing tree branches and pulled himself out.
Mayor Myron J. Walker, a private utilities advocate, announced his run for re election on March 27. Six incumbent council members also declared intentions to seek another term in the city election.
Des Moines State Senator George L Parker chairman of the senate board of control committee charged the superintendents of state mental hospitals with mismanagement and neglect. He attended a health department meeting where hospital pictures showed poor conditions and toilets failing, saying the issue isn’t only funding but neglect and maintenance.
Albert Smith 50 dies in a Council Bluffs hospital from injuries after a freight car door closed on his head at Pacific Junction. Smith, employed by Clark Brothers Construction Co. of Sioux City, was en route to Chicago when the accident occurred. authorities seek to locate his relatives.
Dr M E Barnes head of hygiene at the University of Iowa warned that itinerant scissors grinder Jim Richards could have spread smallpox. Richards was found to be contagious in Iowa City after traveling to Mount Pleasant Ottumwa Columbus Junction and Iowa City to sharpen scissors. He stayed in hotels ate in restaurants and rode with motorists between towns.
The Scottish Highlanders, 33 strong, will travel from Iowa City to Sioux City on January 28 to contribute a Scotch atmosphere to the Robert Burns birthday celebration. The State University follows bagpipe unit plans an appearance at an international competition in San Francisco next summer, with 28 band members, four lassies to dance the Highland Fling, and an officer in charge.
Neighbors reported an elderly farm woman ill and under care. Her husband confessed to officers he hid 2150 dollars in the barn. Lester Best from Cincinnati and Sheriff Bailey secured a temporary guardian to manage the funds until a permanent guardian is appointed. The money consisted of government bonds and old currency.
Adolf Hitler dismissed Hjalmar Schacht as president of the Reichsbank and named Walther Funk to take over. Funk was ordered to nazify the Reichsbank, signaling a shift away from Schacht’s conservative stance and tightening financial policy under Goering's influence.
Governor Harold Stassen, at 31 the nation’s youngest, acts as guest conductor on a new Milwaukee Road Morning Hiawatha speed train between Minneapolis St Paul and Milwaukee Chicago. He collects tickets after the launch, wearing his blue uniform and cap from his prior Milwaukee Road sleeping car days. The train offers air conditioned day coaches, parlor cars, a tap room, and a 43 seat dining car, with mail and express service included.
Senator Rush Holt of West Virginia charged the administration padded the relief rolls at election time. The Senate considered the nomination of former WPA administrator Hopkins as secretary of commerce despite opposition from 20 to 30 senators. Senator Guy M. Gillette of Iowa joined the attack calling Hopkins a political termite.
Miss Ruth Flood will teach speech at Washington junior college and high school beginning the second semester. Miss Frieda Cornelius will take third grade duties at Centennial school, replacing Miss Mildred Woodburn who resigned for Cedar Rapids.
County officials and highway patrolmen will hoist a safety flag atop the Ottumwa Courier building. The green and white emblem will be raised daily and half mast after each traffic fatality in Wapello County. Eighteen co‑eds named as candidates for Old Gold beauty queen election at Iowa Central Technical College with Vera Stateman among them.
A Manhattan Kansas jury awarded The Chicago Rock Island and Pacific Railroad 2262.83 against the Hermanal Company of Fremont Nebraska after a fuel oil truck struck a Rock Island freight train at Riley Kansas causing derailment and two cars destroyed. The railroad also recovered repair costs and labor. The driver was killed and the railroad was not liable due to the driver ignoring Kansas rules. W F Dickinson named as general solitor for the Rock Solard Lines.
Oliver Hammond and Cleo Ramsey, two youths aged 16 and 15, are questioned after allegedly fatally shooting 71-year-old farmer J. W. Bricken during a $9 hold up as they fled from the state children’s home at Carrollton Missouri. Police quoted the older boy saying Bricken refused to surrender. Prosecutor Charles F. Bassett of Henry County, Missouri leads the inquiry.
Ida May Stevenson Plummer aged 64 died at 6 30 this morning at 520 North Avenue. She had been ill since influenza two and a half years ago and seriously ill for two weeks. Funeral at 2 30 Monday at L A Jones funeral home with Rev William M Nichol Jr of United Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial in Woodlawn cemetery. Survived by husband A C Plummer and three daughters Bertha Adelle Anna, youngest at Cornell College Mt Vernon Iowa. Also brothers and sisters Benjamin Stevenson Teris Stevenson Josephine Renton Bertha Stevenson and Mrs Matt Kohn.
Washington County Farmers' Mutual fire truck was called to two fires yesterday evening and last night. The first fire at O Norman home north of town caused little damage after the blaze was extinguished before the truck arrived. The second fire at Grant Humston home northwest of town involved an ice house with most of the roof burned, but the rest saved.
In Chicago a verdict urges motorists to assume responsibility for carelessness near railroad tracks. The ruling emphasizes safety and notes potential damages for losses arising from accidents or negligence at crossings.
An Iowa liquor commission truck skidded into a moving train near Oelwein injuring driver Kenneth Watts who bruised his hip. His helper Charles Jordan, asleep in the cab, escaped with no injuries. The truck, carrying about $50,000 of liquor, front end demolished, crash at a crude crossing on highway 10, five miles northeast of Oelwein.
Sioux City. Don Hunt, 34, WPA laborer on the Floyd river flood control project, is in fair condition after his right leg was amputated. He was crushed when a 15 ton crane caught his leg as he guided the machine down an incline with heavy timbers.
About 26 men attended the first in a series of Scout leader instruction sessions at the Y yesterday evening. Owen Thiel announced Scout work and Dale Kiewey will lead the newly organized Troop F troop, sponsored by Rotary and Y's Men's clubs. Future meetings are planned weekly for six weeks, with a gap next week due to community events, and the new troop will meet on a night other than Monday drill night.
The Veterans Administration reports Iowa pension data by conflict. The largest group is World War veterans totaling about 5,968 recipients with 5,160 service connected disabilities and 663,576 paid to dependents of deceased World War veterans. Civil War veterans number 200 with 1.2 million in pensions to their dependents. Spanish American War veterans in Iowa total 2,425 with 1.6 million in pensions.
A wreath was laid on BE B Hammer's grave at Elm Grove cemetery on the first anniversary of his death. The tribute was by Hadley Edmondson and Ray Phillips, longtime American Pearl Button Co. employees. About 100 attendees, mostly button plant workers, heard prayers by Rev. Carl Klein and a tribute from Rev. Arthur Atack.
Joe Wolfe of Washington reports a thief stole his wallet from a Town City store. The loss includes his ID and driver's license and a cancelled check for $92 062.50, plus a $10 bill and a $20 bill. The check was a long held souvenir from a farm purchase in Washington county.
Glenn B. Holden came back from Des Moines where he spent two days attending sessions of the Farm Bureau and the Iowa Farm Bureau service company.
The 70 piece high school band presents its first year ly concert in the H. & Auditorium at 6 15 tonight following the Junior College basketball game. Special invitations went to parents of instrumental students from both junior high and high school. Admission is free. concert features Rossini overture to The Barber of Seville Fulton suite Rep agreole and Grieg Peer Gynt suites plus ensembles and soloists.

Des Moines January 20 Attorney General Fred Everett issued a notice stating that laws banning slot machines and gambling will be stringently enforced under his administration. The policy, sent to county attorneys and law enforcement, calls these laws the first line of defense against crime and adds that beer and liquor laws will be enforced strictly as well.
President Roosevelt voiced support for the pending bill to authorize construction of naval base facilities at Guam. The Guam project is part of twelve proposed bases totaling 65 million dollars, current measure under consideration in Congress.
Osceola authorities recover the car of M T Swisher of Wayland after it is found parked on the east side of Osceola with no sign of the owner. Swisher, a farm magazine salesman, was last seen in West Chester and has not been heard from since.
Landscape notes report Arnold Smith will relocate to a farm near the Lances west of Wellman, following the Vansickles and other nearby family movements. Several local families hosted or visited over the weekend including the Coakleys, Mareks, and Fishers, with J. A. Huber noted as new Plymouth car owner.
