China near civil war amid Shanghai clashes

Peking Radio reported Mao opponents mobilized peasants to attack pro Mao workers in Shanghai and hinted heavy fighting. The claim followed reports two vice mayors were dragged by Red Guards and officials died by suicide or were implicated in plots. Lin Piao and other leaders faced counter moves as pro Mao factions seized papers.

Baker testifies Johnson sent him to Kerr for help in 1962

In federal court Robert G. Baker testified that Lyndon B. Johnson directed him to seek Senator Robert S. Kerr’s help during a severe 1962 money crisis over the Carousel Motel project. Kerr allegedly arranged a $250,000 loan credit and personal loan support, linking Baker’s debt to a steering storm and partner death.

Capacity crowd at beef banquet in Washington

A capacity crowd of over 400 attended the Fifteenth Annual Beef Producers Banquet at Washington Methodist Church. The event was sponsored by the Washington County Beef Producers Association with meals by church women and entertainment by the Vigortones barbershop quartet. Ed Groomes of Menlo, Iowa, gave a humorous talk and philosophy sketches. Bankers funded the beef, and William Dusenberry served as MC. Association officers named were Dusenberry president, Ray Bonar vice president, and Jim Frier secretary treasurer.

Oil Slick Sighting in Caribbean Nine Missing Heiress Flight

Searchers spotted an oil slick seven miles west of St Thomas as Audrey Bruce Currier, her husband Stephen Currier, and pilot John D Watson remained missing after a private plane vanished between San Juan and St Thomas. Debris earlier nearer Holiday Island proved unrelated. Coast Guard Navy Air Force Civil groups join 5,000 square mile search. FAA said flight plan was not filed, delaying the search by 10 hours.

Low enrollment at adult education classes

Russell Bannister, director, reports few enrollments for winter adult education courses. Potential students are urged to register by mail or at McDaniel's Drug Store before Monday classes start. a minimum of ten students is required or the course will be canceled and fees refunded. Iowa Senate Approves Home Rule Amendment Measure

The Senate backed a constitutional amendment to grant home rule to cities and towns by a 61-0 vote pending in the Iowa House. If passed again, it will go to voters for ratification. previously the 1963 law granting home rule was struck unconstitutional, prompting a constitution change.

Woman Held in Urbana Bank Holdup Freed in Waterloo

A Urbana Savings Bank cashier, Bonnie Richart, 30, was abducted during a bank robbery in Urbana Iowa then released unharmed in Waterloo hours later. The bandit escaped with more than $8,000 in cash and fled in a light blue 1960 Ford Falcon with Black Hawk County plates. The incident, tied to a single robber, involved cutting telephone lines and a forced drive, with Richart later aiding investigators in Benton County. The case followed the nomination of John R. Hansen to the Iowa Highway Commission.
