A 10 ton truck carrying butter eggs and poultry slid into a 16 foot ditch on an icy hill near Algona. Workers reloaded it and prepared to pull free when a second hog truck slid into the same ditch atop the first.
Waterloo report states T. Hutchison of Decorah, former assistant director, appointed acting director of the State Board of Assessment and Review's Sales Tax Division. He fills the post left by Fred Wray of Waterloo, who resigned to become regional supervisor at Waterloo.
Mr and Mrs R E Dooley of Waterloo report a run of injuries in their family. Their son Jack Dooley of Bakersfield California fractured his right ankle while the mother recovers from a broken right wrist after a basement stair fall. The father strained ligaments in his right knee after slipping on ice leaving him unable to tend the furnace.
Dan McGugin longtime head football coach at Vanderbilt University in Nashville died suddenly at his home at age 56 from a heart attack. Born in Iowa he played for Drake in 1898 and 1899, with the 1898 Drake team winning a championship. Dr. D W Morehouse then Drake president was a center on that Drake squad.
Billy, a pet of Mrs. Lydia Knepper in Ames, lives in a box behind a drug store. He acts like a calm dog and scratches to go out. His favorite food is salted nuts and he prefers vanilla ice cream in a cone for dessert.
Spirit Lake area faces heavy snow and prolonged cold as Iowa Conservation Commission tests oxygen in all lakes to prevent fish losses this winter. Fisheries division monitors water conditions and implements oxygenation to protect stocks.
Authorities issue a warning from the U S secret service Omaha to watch for counterfeit ten dollar notes. The fake bills have circulated in Waterloo area and passed at filling stations stores liquor shops and other outlets in recent weeks.
Four Waterloo pilots attempted a plane with two skis five feet long and eight inches wide instead of wheels. The ski plane reportedly took off over light snow in a shorter area and halted faster during landing.
The photograph "Motor Mill" by Robert O. Bickel of Cedar Rapids won first prize in the Iowa historical photographic contest in Iowa City. The image was taken on the Turkey River six miles below Fulkader and the mill was built about 1849.

King George in a sickbed hands over his authority to Queen Mary and four sons, forming an all royal council of state to govern 450,000,000 subjects during illness. The move surprised Britain, though ministers will advise, and a private council signature preceded the document.
In Geneva the League of Nations council of 13 rejected a proposal to investigate Ethiopia's war conditions and said reconciliation between Italy and Ethiopia is temporarily impossible. The committee ruled the league unqualified to conduct the inquiry and adjourned until tomorrow. In Addis Ababa Haile Selassie angrily fired at an Italian bombing plane above Dessye with American adviser Everett Colson nearby.
An informal School of Missions was held at the United Presbyterian church with the study topic Toward a Christian America by Herman N. Morse. The program will continue for five weeks and included Miss Ethel McCreedy's report on the Great Revival of 1800.
Members of the Washington post and Veterans of Foreign Wars are invited to join an American Legion post gathering in Columbus Junction tonight. They will meet at the Pill Brown service station at seven o'clock to begin the trip. Harry Church is the Junction post commander.
Federal tax refunds totaling 56 million plus were announced by the house expenditures committee. Prominent recipients included Mrs Sarah D Roosevelt $647.77 Ogden Mills $11449 James J Tunney $20902 and the Dupont family of Delaware about 48000. Major processing refunds went to Armour and Co Swift and Co and Cudahy Packing Co Chicago. Harold Lloyd receives 2217.
Citizens are invited to a January 22 meeting at City Hall to learn about tax relief efforts by the Iowa Taxpayers Association. Joe L. Long will speak on tax problems. lunch at the Congress Hotel costs fifty cents with reservations by Tuesday. Senator A. Claire Dewey notes Nebraska’s tax relief as a model. attendees from eleven counties expected.

Glenn E. Mace resigned after ten years as chairman of the Washington county republican central committee at a special meeting. Anna Dawson also resigned as vice chairman. They cited lack of time but offer continued support. no successors named yet as the committee plans to choose leaders for spring and the June primary ahead of reorganization for the November election.
Thirty persons attended Happy Hour last night at the Y. Billy Cox played marimbaphone selections and John Lloyd Hughes performed trombone music. Leigh Soule conducted the amateur program with groups presenting home talent. Claude Woods led a group to first prize. Next week Methodlet young people take charge.
Washington January 26 Great Britain filed a formal objection to the publication of confidential documents about the spoils agreement. The protest followed reports that surface details of wartime arrangements were being disclosed by the state department.
The baby bonds compromise bonus bill cleared the Senate by a wide margin today despite expected presidential veto threats, with INS reporting the solid support across the chamber.
Jim White of the Washington Lumber and Fuel Company says King George’s death and the Prince of Wales rise would tie his interests to Britain. He has met the prince in Calgary Alberta where the prince ranches south of the city. White calls the prince the most democratic fellow he has met and believes he would govern with an understanding of people and their needs.
The 1936 Y Men’s Circus opens at 7 30 p m with a side show arranged by Lee Holland featuring wood carving relics costumes and historical items. Ralph Dougherty and John B Black helped secure displays while a nightclub floor show includes several acts and magics by LaRoy the Mystic. A boxing match between 9 year old twins Billy and Bobby Breitenbach is set for Tuesday night.
Washington community players will broadcast Wednesday at 8 p m over WSUI in support of the Leon Beatty American Legion post. The program Let’s Play Rummy by Dave Fulton and Claude Woods is part of a state series of Legion broadcasts and the post invited community participants to present it.

Des Moines Jan 20 An order by Secretary of Agriculture Ray Murray blocks all cattle shipments into Iowa from Nebraska and South Dakota until animals are tested for bovine tuberculosis. Minnesota issues a similar embargo. Iowa joins states that are 100 percent tested. Nebraska testing should finish in months, while South Dakota faces extended embargo due to limited testing. South Dakota annually ships 100,000 to 200,000 feeder cattle into Iowa.
Charles Frickel a 55 year old guard at the Anamosa men's reformatory was slain by a burly inmate using a blackjack. Another guard was wounded and inmate Martin Norton of Davenport aided the guards but arrived too late to save Frickel. Warden W H Frazier noted uncertainty about how the weapon was obtained.
Last night was the coldest of the season in Washington with 17 degrees below zero, following a blustery stretch. In Iowa the coldest since 1933 gripped central to western regions with lows around 30 below in Webster City and Marshalltown and widespread subzero readings across the state.

Dr F W Eastwood pastor of the Presbyterian church was injured in a car accident near Crane Fordsville last Friday afternoon. He remained confined to his bed at home with several cracked ribs and bruises but showed improvement after a restless night. He could not fill his pulpit yesterday while Secretary Leigh Soule of the YMCA spoke at the morning service and the evening service was dismissed.
Ed and Mary Horak of Riverside area were seen shopping in Washington this morning as they visited local stores for daily needs.
Mrs. Sarah Helwick proprietor of the Yarn Shoppe reports her son Lloyd has transferred to the submarine division of the United States Navy for two years. He is stationed at Submarine Base Coco Solo in the Canal Zone. A Washington High School graduate and Washington Junior College alumna, he is well known locally.
