In St Boniface Manitoba police declare the harshest winter period has begun. Pete Nikoluk begins his annual jail term for vagrancy as authorities tighten measures amid cold conditions and growing patrols downtown.
Iowa Tax Commission estimates a two cent state sales tax on services from physicians to plumbers could raise about 20 million dollars annually. The list includes buses, taxis, fuels and electricity services, hotels, laundry, auto repair, farm machinery, heating and plumbing, funeral services, barbering, professionals, contracting, and publishing.
Rep Harry W Ramseyer Republican of Washington filed a uniform egg grading bill in the Iowa legislature. The measure would require license fees from producers and dealers ranging from 12 50 to 50 per year and would grade eggs by USDA standards. Iowa leads in production but ranks low in cash income and retail share to farmers.
Analysts estimate tax collected in other states for similar services implies Iowa residents may pay about 20 million dollars more annually.
Hollywood reports Bing Crosby, 50, underwent kidney stone removal this morning at St John’s Hospital in Santa Monica. He was wheeled into surgery before 7 30 a m for about an hour and a half and was described by nurses as in fine spirit. The stone had caused him severe pain, friends said he joked about it affecting his golf game.
In the new 84th Congress Democrats hold a committee majority. The Navy placed a big order for guided missiles usable from ships or submarines and capable of carrying atomic warheads. Four ships will be equipped with special radar units for continental air defense.
The 1954 Community Chest drive in Washington nears completion with new Minute Man members and anonymous donations. New members include Dr. G. E. Montgomery, Robert Reed, Santos Hernandez, Herbert Osincup, George Breitenbach, John Winga, Miss Ruth Kittle, Clarence Logan, and Bob Logan. About $300 remains to reach the $24,300 goal.
A severe winter storm battered southern California with high winds heavy rain and mountain snow. Destructive gusts toppled a billboard and damaged vehicles while Central and northern California faced a separate wintry blast with winds reaching 104 mph and deep snow across the region.
August John Klein 86 died January 13 at Mason City after eight weeks of illness from arterial sclerosis. Services January 15 at St. Elizabeth's church Har pers were led by Rev. J. B. Diamond with burial in the local cemetery. Survivors include sons Everett J. Klein and Alva L. Klein among others, plus nine grandchildren and three sisters. Mrs. Klein died in 1948.
Lt Gov Leo Elthon announced 39 senate committees for the 1955 Iowa Legislature including three new ones. Carl T Anderson of Wellman was named chair of the Iowa Development committee. New panels cover toll road, reapportionment and parole survey. Democrats hold no chairmanships in the Senate. C S Van Eaton leads the Toll Road panel and De Vere Watson heads Reapportionment.
A large number of Chinese Nationalist warplanes attacked Communist vessels along China's southeast coast in retaliation for Red actions at Yikiangshan and the Tachen islands. Nationalist bombers hit Amoy and Swatow areas while Navy ships suffered heavy losses. garrison at Tachens resists as talks of invasion rise.
President Eisenhower said the Hammarskjold mission to Peiping is neither a success nor a failure at this stage and should have a full chance to free the Americans jailed as spies. He noted Dulles will report after his meeting with Hammarskjold and Lodge, while Hammarskjold kept silent.

A Holdrege man noticed his seat cushions on fire in his car. He drove to the fire station, sounded the alarm, waited for the blaze to be extinguished, then drove away sitting on a wet seat.

A 30 ton Bulldog Walker tank from Fort Devens is on standby amid threats from the rebels. The governor and attorney general vow no compromise and to prosecute for first degree murder if violence continues.
