Rioting Prisoners Seize Five Guards at Massachusetts Prison

Ten of twenty two rioting inmates surrendered after eight hours in the death row section as state troopers watched. Up to twelve inmates remained at large with four ringleaders resisting surrender while the prison faced a possible storming of the solitary block.

Washington Jaycees boast 21 projects in 1954 week

Leon Hilfman vice president of the Washington Junior Chamber of Commerce says the Jaycees have a busy 1954 with 21 community projects. Activities included the spring trade show Easter egg hunt safety campaigns and county fair events while endorsing a school bond issue for a new gym and classrooms. Five Inch Snow Falls Across Iowa Statewide

Snow piled up to five inches in the southwest of Iowa with heavier totals along the Iowa Missouri border near Lenox. The Des Moines Weather Bureau noted the snow would recede and end tonight while cold Canadian air drives temperatures down to single digits northwest and the low teens southeast.

Monroe County seeks federal disaster aid for Albia water

Gov. Leo A. Hoegh telegraphed President Eisenhower asking that Monroe County and Albia be declared a disaster area due to a severe water shortage. The Albia reservoir, fed by surface drainage, would be replenished by pumping up to one million gallons daily from Cedar Creek bottoms two miles northwest of Albia.

Street commissioner Orville Long announced snow removal will begin in the Washington business district tonight and Wednesday morning. Motorists must move cars from the square and one block off in all directions by midnight to speed the work.

New Iowa Industry Creates 1 650 Jobs Across 27 Counties

Iowa Develop ment Commission reports 31 new manufacturing enterprises in 1954 generated 1,650 jobs with weekly payrolls over 100 000 and annual five million dollars. Davidson notes payrolls recycle locally boosting state sales tax and funding school aid and welfare. Investment totaled 16.5 million with at least 500 000 yearly local property taxes expected.

Dulles Seeks China Report and Hammarskjold Talk

Secretary of State John Foster Dulles said he asked Dag Hammarskjold to come to Washington on Wednesday for talks on what he called the indefensible holding of American airmen by Red China. Izaak Walton Chapter Sets New Meeting Place and Schedule

The Chicagua Chapter of the Izaak Walton League moves to the YMCA Community Room for its 1955 meetings starting Monday January 31 with a free pancake and sausage fry and membership night. Food and trade may trump arms in anti communism

Defense Secretary Charles E. Wilson told the House Ways and Means Committee that food clothing and ideas could play a larger role than military power in fighting communism. He urged approval of a three year extension to stimulate world trade under the Reciprocal Trade Agreements Act. He said removing restrictions on international trade would help allies maintain living standards and build strong economies to resist subversion. The final showdown may be economic political or propaganda rather than military.

Registrations For Adult Classes Fall Short Of Last Winter

Last night 42 adults enrolled in Washington High School adult education classes, far below prior years when 64 pursued five classes. This year offers typing arts and crafts and conversational Spanish with hope for clothing courses if registrations rise. Adults may register this week at McDaniel's drug store or at the high school. Classes run each Monday evening for a 10 week period.

Clinton Man Fires Shotgun To Fend Off Arrest

In Clinton Iowa a 50 year old man Ambrose McDonnell fired at police sheriffs deputies and firemen when they moved to arrest him for a sanity hearing. He held out for over an hour before surrendering after tear gas was used and he walked out with a Bible in his hand. He fired about seven shots and hit no one.

Winter Storms Sweep Coast to Coast Across Nation

A coast to coast winter storm array brought 104 mph winds along the California coast and heavy snows in the Sierras. Central Illinois and Indiana faced warnings of three to six inches of snow while a Rockies storm dumped up to two inches in Kansas and Nebraska. Considerable colder conditions in the northwest half tonight with snow in the southeast and extreme south early. Wednesday remains partly cloudy and cold with lows from 2 to 10 in the northwest and 10 to 18 in the southeast. highs Wednesday 20 to 28. Thursday turns cloudy with a chance of snow in the south late, continuing cold. Temperatures through Sunday run 4 to 6 degrees below normal with normal highs 25 north 34 south and lows 5 north 14 south. Steady cold with localized flurries then gradual warming. precipitation around 1/2 inch north 1/4 inch south as snow in spots.
