Democrats Gather for Gala Inauguration in Washington

Democrats from every state converge on Washington for a three day inaugural celebration culminating in the Wednesday outdoor swearing in of President Johnson. The festivities include a National Gallery reception, a National Guard Armory gala with one million dollars in entertainment, and an outdoor parade with an expected 500000 spectators. The total three day cost tops 2.1 million, a record, with additional spending by visitors on travel and attire. Weather concerns loom with possible snow and near freezing temperatures.

Two Churches Vote on Local Presbyterian Merger

In Washington on Sunday January 17 both First Presbyterian and Marion Avenue United Presbyterian voted on merging. Marion Avenue favored by 75 percent while First Presbyterian opposed by 52 percent. Results will be reviewed by the Presbytery of Southeast Iowa committee before church action.

MRS HASKINS 79 DIES. RITES PLANNED IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Mrs Gustus C Haskins 79 of 614 East Madison died Sunday at Mercy Hospital Cedar Rapids after a short illness. Funeral Wednesday 2 PM at Nazarene church with Rev Eddie West and Rev Rasche presiding. Jones Funeral Home in charge. Burial Elm Grove Cemetery. She born Edith Maria Bolander Sept 19 1886 in Green City Missouri married Gustus C Haskins June 15 1909. Survived by husband four daughters eight grandchildren fifteen great grandchildren three sisters.

Arctic cold grips nation driving record lows and snow chaos

Arctic air chilled the South and East with sub zero readings in several states and Florida records. Hundreds of roads blocked by drifting snow in Indiana as a weekend storm claimed 21 lives. Men's Fellowship Prayer Luncheon Announces Theme

The Christian Emphasis Committee of the YMCA today announced the Annual Men's Fellowship Prayer luncheon will be held Thursday February 11 at 12 noon at the local YMCA. Walter Westen, chairman, said the theme will be Christan Unity. Tickets go on sale Sunday January 23 and at the YMCA desk. All men in the Washington area are invited to attend the one hour event. Johnson outlines Poseidon missile and defense plan

President Johnson sent a defense message to Congress detailing a new submarine carried ballistic missile named Poseidon with double Polaris power and a winged short range attack missile called Sram to be deployed on bombers. He forecast $300 million in defense cuts next year, with current and next-year spending near 49.3 and 49 billion dollars, and stressed enduring deterrence through readiness.

Iowa Weather: Fair Through Tuesday With Cooling Outlook
