Miss Martha Lois Koch of Evansville Indiana was named honorary cadet colonel while William B. Hills of Iowa City was named cadet colonel at the State University of Iowa ROTC annual military ball in Iowa City.
Davis county's oldest twins Miss Rachel Rader and Mrs. Jane Giles of Pulaski mark another birthday milestone at age 96. Their 101-year-old brother Anthony Rader, who celebrated with them last year, died within the past year.
Des Moines reports influenza in mild form at epidemic proportions per state health official Carl F. Jordan. Since January first 479 cases statewide with 262 this week. No influenza deaths yet. Data show cases fairly evenly spread across Iowa.
Des Moines born Ralph Budd, 61, received the John Fritz gold medal from William Henry Harrison at the American Society of Civil Engineers in New York. As president of the Burlington lines, Budd was honored for 40 years in railroading and for pioneering streamlined trains. He serves on a defense commission and is brother to Des Moines streets commissioner John Budd.
A coal truck and a semi-trailer crashed on icy Highway 6 near Colfax. The semi-trailer, owned by Prucka Transportation Co of Omaha and driven by J L Palmer, toppled onto the Colfax truck driven by Robert Hopkins. No injuries reported.
Secretary of State Hull announced general licenses permitting Canada bound exports of essential war materials including tungsten aluminum gasoline and oil production equipment and certain machine tools.
Reverend George Kerr recently from Pawnee CityNeohr was installed as pastor of the Washington United Presbyterian Church. The ceremony yesterday featured Dr J B Pollock West Chester presiding and delivering the questions. Rev W H Hemphill Ainsworth gave the pastor's charge and Dr Pollock delivered the other charge. The sermon on The Model Church was by Rev Harold Irwin Columbus City, nephew of local residents. Benediction marked Kerr's formal assumption of duties.
A blaze about 10 pm destroyed the John Davis place farm home of the George Howard family eight miles southwest of Washington. The family escaped with almost nothing after moving into the fire hit house. Neighbors aided as the wind fed flames toward the barn and crib, but the outbuildings were kept safe. Insurance covered part of the loss. Mrs Gibson of Des Moines reported saving most household goods stored upstairs.
Nearly 400 tickets have been sold for four Institute of International Understanding lectures at the high school auditorium over consecutive Mondays. Groups buying tickets include the Rotary club 228 Fortnightly club 70 Washington school teachers 43 Spanish American veterans 14 and the Y M C A 12 totaling 367. Reserved seats account for 89. The first lecture is next Monday at eight with Principal Erbe presiding. Lloyd Erickson Riggs will speak outlining his background from Illinois and Paris to World War I service and diplomacy.
Reports say a Mussolini Hitler meeting will occur within 24 hours at Munich or Salzburg with time and venue kept secret. The last encounter was in Florence October 28 after Italian forces entered Greece.
Two vehicles driven by Lloyd Scott and John Therion collided yesterday afternoon on North Marion Avenue near the Sinclair oil station and Harry Whittaker yard. Both cars sustained mashed and dented fenders as the main damage.
The NLRB issued an order directing Ford to immediately reinstate 975 former employees who were allegedly replaced during a 1937 shutdown at its Kansas City plant.
A veteran American diplomat, Mr. Riggs spent over twenty years in government service promoting and protecting American trade. He served in the Orient from Karachi to Kabul, traveled through northern Africa and Asia, and was regarded as an authority on American Oriental relations and languages. He authored books and received several decorations for his diplomatic achievements.
Des Moines reports Iowa farmers are best prepared to face defense needs with abundant fod and fiber for civilians and soldiers. Harvey Hazen cites a strong AAA program, farm income potential, and the aim to prevent foreign market loss while boosting domestic demand and rural employment.
Judge J. G. Patterson ordered another one week delay in jury trials for the January term. Petit jurors were to begin next Monday but will report Monday January 27 at two o'clock in the afternoon. Patterson returned to Oskaloosa after holding court in Washington during the week.
The district court clerk’s office issued two marriage licenses yesterday. Robert B. More of Willmer Minnesota and Jean E. Moore of Washington were joined for a license, and Earl L. Zook and Wanda Hampton, both unknown in origin, were granted another license.
Washington experienced a rapid weather shift with a daytime high near 30 degrees above zero and a midnight drop to zero. Two inches of snow fell yesterday as a northwest wind whipped a blizzard like storm before easing. Ice on walkways formed during recent light rain totaling 0.35 inches as clouds cleared and moonlit snow gave way to bright sun.
Captain O J Brown announced entrainment orders for Troop D 113th Cavalry to Camp Bowie Brownwood Texas. Washington soldiers depart by Milwaukee line at four PM Thursday January 23 joining Council Bluffs troop at Kansas City to form a single eight car special including four Pullmans a kitchen car baggage and two horse cars. They reach Brownwood nine AM Saturday. Lt Nate Young with eight men leads scout cars from Oskaloosa as cars from the Oskaloosa troop join. Troop D is dismissed until Monday morning with some men staying home over Sunday and a church service invitation at United Presbyterian tomorrow.
Senator Carter Glass of Virginia urged a U S war declaration against Germany calling Hitler a threat and noting the decision should rest with policy experts while stressing his view was personal. Knudsen warned Britain’s fall could force axis war, urging prompt Britain aid and production steps. The War Department awarded a 36.5 million contract to Buick for Pratt Whitney engines as 799 aircraft were built in December.
Seven people passed the driving license tests yesterday earning licenses to operate cars. Winners include George Swift C K E Bowden Harry D Levy Daniel Yoder William Leroy Miller Gordon Pearson Lester Butterbaugh. One instruction permit issued and four chauffeurs licenses went to Washington residents Robert Crone Richard Miller Robert O Palmer and Orin A Wallace.
Mrs Wilma Hatcher of Glenwood missed Sunday School last Sunday for the first time in 19 years due to a hospital stay.
