Washington housewives were alerted to possible rusty water at times over the next days as city workmen flush outer hydrants starting around 9 a.m. Tuesday continuing into Wednesday. Women are urged to check water before laundry. A new pump allows storage in the cement reservoir near the water works.
Members of the Washington Chamber of Commerce Retail Merchants Bureau will meet Thursday at 9 30 a.m. in the basement room of the Iowa Southern Utilities building Election of officers for the coming year will be held at this time and a new calendar for retail promotions will be drawn.
Two young Webster City women, Diane Irene Aydelott 26 and Lorrie Lou Young 22, died when their car skidded on a frosty stretch of U.S. 20 east of Fort Dodge and struck another vehicle driven by 18 year old Martin J. Ermels. The victims were en route to Fort Dodge for work at the time of the collision.
Washington tribes of the Indian Guides and Indian Princesses met at the Y community room Sunday to induct new members and officers. More than 100 youths and fathers participate in Indian Guides or Indian Princesses to foster father child relations. Bill Guenther presided at a potluck lunch, with dances by the St James Order of the Arrow Boy Scouts. Wayne Brock named new chief, Garth Rustan wampum bearer, Lloyd Beenblossom scribe, Peter Bell medicine man.
A guiding committee led by Jim Bash of Golden Touch Decorators was named to push a possible face lifting of the Washington business district. Members include Dick Anderson, Dave Elder, Walter Farrell Jr., and E D Morrison Jr. The plan aims to refurbish and emphasize existing architectural features, with early steps to brief property owners and occupiers on nature, possibilities, and costs. Originating in Albia Iowa, the plan has been adopted by several communities with modest expense and proven results. Multiple small group meetings have occurred with more planned.
Chief Justice C Edwin Moore said the Iowa Supreme Court will move with reasonable haste to redraw the state’s reapportionment to meet one man one vote standards. Acknowledging legislative concerns, Moore noted support from lawmakers for continued court and University of Iowa center expertise, with a target of April 1 for a final plan and funding assurances from the Iowa Executive Council and Governor Ray.
Carl Kallas and his elderly parents faced a devastating blaze that destroyed their home and farm buildings. The fire started in the attic around 5:30 p.m. Saturday after a suspected electrical short, with firemen battling sub zero conditions until Sunday. The couple saved the meat cutting shop, but the house and most belongings were lost. Insurance payouts totaling 17,000 will not replace decades of possessions including 900 antique items and family pictures. The elderly couple is coping with burns to Mrs. Kallaus and emotional distress as they plan to rebuild.
Announcement in the Evening Journal reports that 31 local businesses and Washington merchants sponsor a Vagabond Weekend Vacation trip series. Winners may visit any of 10 cities including Winnipeg Denver Minneapolis Oklahoma City Cleveland Cincinnati St Louis Calgary Chicago Omaha Kansas City and Missouri trips can be taken within six months. Free registration blanks are available at sponsoring firms and full rules appear in a separate Journal advertisement.
The Y's Men announce the spring musical Fiddler on the Roof starring Tevye and his five daughters. Robert Huber and Leon Hillman name the show as Broadway hit popular at the time, with open auditions scheduled January 30 and 31 for all ages in Washington and nearby areas. The library offers books and part descriptions for reader preparation.
Jaycees will honor employers of Jaycee members during Bosses Night as part of Jaycee Week. Leon Hillman will emcee the event at EC Hall, with awards for Key Man, outstanding educator, farmer and religious leader. Mark R. Pogrebin, PhD candidate and law enforcement instructor, will speak on his work with underprivileged and delinquent youths.
An elderly attorney Edward A. Schmidt 80 was beaten and stabbed four times in the chest and heart of the office in Oskaloosa. Police found his body slumped under a desk after a friend reported the absence. An autopsy cited stabbing and a possible robbery motive. The Iowa Bureau of Criminal Investigation joined the probe.
San Francisco reports picket lines reappear at all major West Coast ports as longshoremen resume strike actions. Negotiations continued at Pacific Maritime Association offices in marathon talks to settle the dispute, after a Taft Hartley injunction expired and a renewal deadline was set at 8 a.m. today.
