Kyle Jones, helping Crystal Ice Co harvesters, drove into 12 feet of water in Nashua. He was pulled from the vehicle by fellow workers and later rescued. three wreckers required three hours to extract the truck from the river.
Centerville resident John Batistello was fined $50 by Judge Charles A. Dewey for a federal liquor law violation as the federal court opened here. Appanoose County farmer David McCarty was sentenced to 99 days in jail after being charged with concealing bankruptcy assets.

Waverly Willian Toefte of Waverly learns his father Wilhelm Toefte of Copenhagen Denmark has been made a knight of the Danish flag by order of the king. The senior Toefte has served as master of the Copenhagen custom house for forty nine years.
Wayne R. Wellman and Robert McElroy of Ottumwa were sentenced to 20 years each in state prison by Judge Dan Hamilton after pleading guilty to entering Leighton Farmers Savings Bank with intent to rob. The 1960 robbery yielded $1,640. Both defendants cried in court as their fathers urged punishment.
Miss Mildred Gilson, 18, of 617 Fortieth Street Rock Island was fined $1 plus costs in police court today after pleading guilty to larceny for taking lingerie valued at 1.50 from the Grant store. She was arrested Saturday afternoon after a store employee saw the act. the defendant had no comment.
Republican Committeeman E Spengler criticized Democratic practices at a loyalty rally in Cedar Rapids. He cited State Treasurer Leo Wegman’s $3 5 million anticipatory warrant issue to Carleton PD Tech and Harold M Cooper’s gift of 200 seals to J L Farmers, Cedar Shaps is canning executive, as examples of alleged improper actions.
Anamosa District Court Judge W. R. Maines sentences the youth, eight years max in the Anamosa reformatory, plus a $1000 fine and costs after a guilty plea to manslaughter arising from a kick to his father J. J. Dorgan. The incident stemmed from a dispute that led to the father collapsing from abdominal injuries.
In Lenore Illinois bank robbery attempt ends in bloodshed as three men die and three are wounded. Bank cashier J C Bunty Sheriff Glenn Axeline of Marshall County and an unidentified bandit die by self inflicted and other gunfire during a vigilante siege. Security forces capture the surviving bandits after a chase to a farmhouse. Norman Nash wounded in hand. one bandit wounded. another commits suicide.
Federal agents and Marion County officers fatally wound Fred Barker and Ma Barker at a Florida farm house after a raid linked to the Barker Karpis gang. A firefight with machine guns and tear gas followed several hundred rounds exchanged. Barker and Ma Barker die near the scene. Authorities suspect Arthur Barker and Alvin Karpis may be nearby.
Light rain froze on sidewalks in the Washington area creating ice hazards. Weather records chief Charles Dol Reed notes similar conditions statewide as colder air moves in. Reports say Mrs. Frank Converse and F. R. Ruble of Tracy were killed in the incidents.

Miss Margaret Duff died Tuesday at University Hospital Iowa City after years of illness. Funeral services will be Friday at 2 30 p m at Sherman Funeral Home with Rev D Chalmers Fulton in charge. Interment in Woodlawn Cemetery. She lived in Washington all her life born Aug 6 1867 and remembered for humor and kindness. She was active in the United Presbyterian church and a skilled bookkeeper. Her death ends the Duff line locally with a nephew arriving from Rapid City South Dakota.
Frank B. Miller becomes Chamber of Commerce president with Lewis Warren as vice president Ed Muck treasurer and Clarence Logan secretary. Terms begin February as officers plan year activities and push completion of the Washington Wayland road while supporting Burlington line plans through Iowa with hearings set for February 7. Members back the concept as a needed communications link with Chicago to California. Named directors include George McDaniel A E Atchison O E Schmitt I Rothschild Dr W S Kyle and Lewis Warren.
A passenger vehicle collided with a truck near Knoxville. United Air Lines reported their planes grounded at Cheyenne and Iowa City due to ice and poor visibility.

In Flemington New Jersey on January 16, Edward J. Reilly chief counsel for the Hauptmann defense says 50 witnesses can testify that Isa dore Fisch held the Lindbergh ransom money. Prosecution counters by bringing Fisch relatives from Germany. Within hours two handwriting experts testified Hauptmann wrote the nursery note.
The city hall auditorium hosts a crowded poultry show with chickens ducks geese and turkeys and novelty displays. In Des Moines on January 16 the lower house approved by unanimous vote a resolution calling for an inquiry into the state liquor commission. The measure, introduced by Alesch, Democrat, proceeds to the senate where a similar proposal exists. The resolution creates a committee to conduct the inquiry with mandatory operation by the house.
At a church gathering yesterday evening in the dining room the Presbyterian men formed a church brotherhood. James Dewit was elected president, Vernon Witting vice president, and William Grant secretary and treasurer. Committees include Entertainment Dr. F W Eastwood Fred Moore Milan Shields Henry Bailey Kitchen L B Patterson Si las Korf Ralph Dougherty Herman Twinam Fred Neigswan ger Fred Longer Dining room John Lemmon A B Schmoeller Tickets Harry Turner chair man. They plan monthly meetings with a featured speaker and a supper led by chef L B Patterson. Eastwood spoke on church loyalty and Shields orchestra and a four man quartet performed.
