American Field Service exchange student Lise Nielsen will speak to local groups after February while attending Washington High School. Organizations may reserve by calling the high school office. transportation funds and hosting arrangements with the Laing family in Washington are also offered.
Gene Lintz and George Fulton won first place in the Crawfordsville Lions Club 1973 corn and soybean contest with top yields. Lintz led corn at 154.60 bushels per acre, Fulton posted 55.43 bushels per acre in soybeans. second and third place finishers and other high yields listed.
State Bank announced a stock dividend for stockholders of record December 31 1973. Total assets reached 16.8 million at year end up 1.5 million. Directors re elected for 1974 were Winga Kos Holland McDaniel Morrison Miller and Heilman. Officers named for 1974 include John Winga chairman Frank Kos chairman executive committee Logan Heilman Milo Orris Keith Lord Jerry Bryan Larry Wells and Juanita Hering.
U S Secretary of State Henry Kissinger met with Israeli leaders including Yigal Allon Moshe Dayan Abba Eban and Golda Meir to seek a workable Egyptian Israeli disengagement near the Suez front. Officials said plans are close and only minor issues remain. A Israeli sniper raid southwest of Ismailia killed another Israeli soldier as fighting on the front continued.
Kalona town marshal Wilson L. Miller resigned citing a smear campaign. He offered a $1000 reward for arrest of those behind the tactic, noting two signs painted near businesses calling him "Radar Willie" and obscenities. Randy Tadlock was named his replacement. Miller blamed gossip and said he may stay in Kalona.
Technical experts report an 18 minute gap on a Nixon Watergate tape resulted from multiple erasures stopped and started by hand. The findings, submitted to Judge Sirica, counter claims that Rose Mary Woods caused the whole gap during transcription.
Gov. Robert D Ray proposes repealing Iowa three percent sales tax on food and prescription drugs to use a state treasury surplus. He forecasts a end of year balance of $100 million, then $64.4 million by July 1 1975, and adds a 6.5 percent cost of living increase for school workers.
Iowa lawmakers moved toward a 55 mph speed limit on highways as House and Senate committees approved the measure. The bill sets 55 mph until a fuel shortage ends or June 30, 1975, with costs estimated at about $30,000 to update highway signs statewide.
The government cut heating oil allocations by 15 percent and requires households to lower thermostats by six degrees to prevent winter shortages. Businesses face 10 degree reductions. gasoline, propane, and diesel allocations vary by sector with 1972 baselines. A standby gasoline plan is possible if shortages worsen.
The two day program for young farm couples starts January 17 at the Washington YMCA with 9 45 registration. Speakers from Cedar Rapids and Washington County Extension Services cover farm business costs goals and family life topics. A second day on January 24 includes livestock crop production rental agreements and family communication.

A 17-year-old senior allegedly assaulted Stanley Schmidkunz, a first year distributive education teacher at WHS, in a classroom around 1 45 pm Monday. The student is suspended and juvenile authorities are notified with a possible expulsion hearing underway. Police reportedly did not arrest the juvenile.
