Washington County sheriff's officers responded to a Sunday morning break-in at the Dale Johnston residence in the Ainsworth community. Entry was gained by breaking a rear door glass and a closet yielded an M-11-48 Remington shotgun and a .22 caliber Winchester rifle, pump action, hammer type.
Forecasters note a real heat wave in the Washington area with temperatures expected to reach 40 today. The city had fallen to 22 below zero Friday night, marking a sharp 62-degree swing since then as the weekend warming continued. Skies were clear and conditions mild overnight after a weekend rise.
The Agri-Business conference scheduled in Washington and sponsored by the Washington Chamber of Commerce has been canceled due to insufficient interest. Chamber officials plan to revise the program and offer another farm-business program later. Pre-registration fees will be refunded by the Chamber.

A special three judge panel appointed by Maryland’s Court of Appeals recommended disbarment of former Vice President Spiro T. Agnew. The action follows the Maryland Bar Association’s charge that his no contest plea to federal income tax evasion admitted professional misconduct.
A five hour blaze in Sioux City left the Gerald Cook family homeless after they escaped at 4 a.m. Saturday in sub zero temperatures. Fire officials have not yet determined the cause. the Fire Prevention Bureau is investigating possible origins.
Fire inspectors responding to a neighbor complaint found seven 55 gallon drums and thirteen 5 gallon cans in a two car garage attached to the house. All containers were filled with gasoline and the homes hot water heater was located in the garage.
Police in Lakewood New York recovered the frozen body of 14 year old Daniel Ebersole who had been kidnaped and beaten. The ransom of 15000 dollars was paid by the father but three teenagers were arrested and charged with the crime and held on 100000 dollars bond. An autopsy will determine if he froze to death or died from the beating. The body was found in woods about 70 miles south of Buffalo where temperatures neared zero.
DES MOINES UPI Democratic Leader Dale Cochran accuses Gov. Robert D. Ray of building a wall between the executive and legislative branches during the opening of the 1974 Iowa Legislature. Cochran and Speaker Andrew Varley urge cooperation and warn against premature spending tied to a possible $150 million surplus.
Iowa Social Services Commissioner Kevin J. Burns said the state will closely monitor the Body Shop Massage parlor in West Des Moines amid allegations it sought to hire ADC recipients and instructed them not to report earnings. Ankeny councilman Edward Augustine is named by officials as the operator, though he denies ownership. A state employee identified Augustine at a recent Ankeny meeting.

He criticizes Congress and the Nixon administration for pressuring states with highway funds at stake and stresses careful study over rush to judgment. Social Security payments to Iowans reach 791 million in 1973, up 154 million from 1972.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Ismail Fahmi in Aswan rejected the plan Kissinger brought from Israel calling for withdrawal to about 20 miles from the canal and thinning out Egyptian forces. Fahmi said Egypt will demand an Egyptian plan and map. Kissinger called the talks the toughest negotiation and said he would return to Israel with an Egyptian response.
