A blast at 1 p.m. damages a four story warehouse at 617 North LaSalle Street, with 11 to 12 workers inside. Firemen fear at least three people are trapped beneath debris as gas leaks and a massive pile of furniture blocks the northern half of the building. Three people, two men and a woman, are hospitalized.
Des Moines reports that 79 percent of farm people surveyed by Wallace Homestead magazine favor the new 1947 weed law and its county weed commissioners. About 83 percent call for stricter enforcement to prevent weeds from seeding, even if angering some residents.
Berlin reports say the German union leaders threaten a general strike of four million workers over food shortages. British sources link the threat to a communist plot and a document called Protocol M. U.S. forces in Frankfurt remain alert while Ruhr food demands spark censorship and union warnings of action before May.

A three story Ottumwa building housing a supply market and Sears Roebuck space burned for three hours ending at midnight. The blaze devastated groceries on the top floors while the roof collapsed and crews from Ottumwa and Fairfield fought the fire with all available equipment and personnel.

Prompt action by Washington firemen averted serious damage at the Mrs J L Mayer home 428 South Iowa avenue when smoke was detected upstairs. Firemen found smoldering ashes had ignited a basement partition near the coal bin and extinguished the blaze before major damage occurred.
Al Josephus Daniels died at his Raleigh home today at age 385. Daniels, longtime editor of the News and Observer, served as World War I secretary of the navy and later as ambassador to Mexico in the Good Neighbor policy.
BeLOIT Wisconsin thieves cut down a six inch tree to reach and steal the boat chained to it. The owner Harrys Lorenzo believed tying the craft to the tree would protect it. Local police pursue leads as the boat remains missing.
Funeral services are set for Friday at two o'clock in the Sherman funeral home for Mrs Anna Bell Riley Son who died yesterday. Born January 15 1861 in Washington she was a daughter of John H and Nancy Stewart. She married Smith E Riley over 60 years ago and lived in Washington before operating millinery stores in Iowa towns then moving to Paola Kansas. She was a member of the United Presbyterian church. Survivors include her son Fred Riley of Washington a half brother Roy Stewart of Washington and a half sister Mrs Wilma Wallace of Ferndale Michigan. Rev George Kerr will officiate and burial will be in Elm Grove cemetery.
Superintendents from Wellman Riverside West Chester Brighton Crawfordsville Ainsworth Kalona and Wastington gathered Wednesday evening in Washington high school to discuss county education events. They planned a Bar Health and Hearing Conservation talk for January 22 with Dr Den Lierle as speaker and set dates for annual one act play festivals and a county junior high basketball tournament. The high school county tournament was scheduled for January 28 29 30 at Riverside.
Turkey growers in the district are invited as guests of Aready Farm Milling at a dinner meeting tomorrow night at 7 30 in the Y M C A. The Corn Belt Turkey farms local dealer helps sponsor the Washington event with all turkey interests invited.
A modern residence belonging to Keith Nau two miles east of the county line on the road to Columbus Junction burned rapidly Wednesday noon. Nau discovered the blaze. parts of contents on the main floor and basement were saved. The cause is undetermined. Columbus Junction department was unable to suppress the fast spread.
DES MOINES IOWA JAN 15 Winter ends tempers with a cold wave sweeping the state tonight and tomorrow with zero to 10 below zero readings. Strong northwest winds and cloudy skies accompany the real winter push. A few snow flurries expected but skies and winds should ease tomorrow.
Norman Hancock and Edward Atherbolt Cedar were sentenced to 10 years each for the October robbery at the Commercial Inn in Muscatine. The two men, accused of taking 400 dollars, were sent to Fort Madison state prison after the district court judge Glenn D. Neley imposed the sentences.

Montreal January 15 nine persons killed and 56 injured in a collision of two Canadian National passenger trains near Wikes Quebec about 90 miles north of Montreal. One train stopped on the main line in extreme cold. a following express train rammed the rear passenger train. Officials announced the toll and cause.
Christ Christensen, a milkman, collapsed and died on the porch steps of the house where he was born in Marinette Wisconsin during a routine delivery. He was 50 years old.
Nancy Blood 97 of Lynn has seen war touch her family across five generations. Her husband died in the Civil War. Her son served in the Spanish American War. A grandson fought in World War I and a great grandson is a World War II veteran.

Fifty Iowa nurses have registered to attend a week long child health institute at the University of Iowa Medical Laboratory starting Monday. Institute chairman Mrs Stephen Nagytfy said talks will come from university medical staff. Nurses come from public health school and county roles and pediatric department work. Special lecturer Miss Florence Blake from the University of Chicago will speak.

Elger Arndt, 35, celebrated the removal of a cast at a Spokane Eagles club with a friend's backslap. He returned to the hospital with a broken back after the impact, reentering care for injuries.
