Des Moines Drake University students train under a federal program with ski equipped ships at the Des Moines airport. Twenty students including one woman are learning to fly. fourteen have soloed since November 16 after eight hours of dual instruction. If a student does not solo after ten hours the government stops funding.
Twenty nine NYA projects approved in Iowa will employ 132 men and 40 women across 21 towns. The Mount Pleasant resident training match at the state hospital is the largest, employing 560 men. workers will have a three fourths schedule at Iowa Wesleyan College with proper arrangements.
Des Moines plans for the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation annual meeting January 17 18 and 19 draw hundreds of farmers to sessions in Des Moines Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia of New York will speak on Thursday The convention includes a one day Iowa Farm Bureau Women session at the Fort Des Moines Hotel with speaker Mrs Quinney Wright of Chicago on South American agriculture and economics
Iowa jumped from sixth to first in red clover seed production last year. Iowa produced 246000 bushels, enough to sow about 1700000 acres. Figures from the U S Department of Agriculture crop reporting board show Iowa ahead of Ohio Indiana and Illinois, leading producers over the past decade.
Iowa Bureau of Labor reports statewide December employment up 2.5 percent from November and 9.4 percent from December 1935. Seven of twelve industrial groups rose, with wholesale and retail trades up 8.3 percent and paper products, printing and publishing up 5.2 percent.
The Iowa Department of Health reports 2451 new dwellings valued at 9,199,482 in 15 first class cities in 1939, up from 1720 units valued at 6,645,898 in 1938. Des Moines led with 2,938,315, Waterloo 1,435,220. Clinton reported none. Remodeling also rose to 1,540,576 in 1939 from 1,525,842 in 1938.
January 15 to 26 forecast shows light precipitation and seasonable to colder temperatures. Early week mild conditions give way to a colder trend by mid to late January across the region including Des Moines and the upper Mississippi valley.

Riverside, Jan 15 Charles Cummings 75 died this morning about 12 30 at Washington county hospital where he was taken Wednesday as a pneumonia patient Born June 1864 on a farm southeast of Riverside son of Andrew and Phoebe Myers Cummings Spent life on local farms He married Letha Lingo June 6 1888 They had one infant son and adopted two boys Russell and Everett From Ottumwa Orphans Home He was active in civic affairs serving on city council and Riverside school board president of Iowa township Republican committeeman He belonged to the Masonic lodge He is survived by wife and two adopted sons Russell of Rock Island and Kyverett at home
Springfield, HL Jan 15 The Illinois United Mine Workers president Ray Edmondson called off a planned strike by 6000 coal miners after operators assured that on shift shooting of new coal veins would be abandoned. The move followed Edmondson protest over mining methods he said endanger miners and risk disasters like Bartley West Virginia tragedy.
No definite plans have yet been made and none of the Washington members attempted to make the trip to Ft. Madison.
A double funeral was held at St James Catholic church for Attorney Edward J Harmeier and his sister Mrs J A Marie who died suddenly of heart attacks last week on West Main Street. Burial was delayed due to a blizzard and blocked roads. Pallbearers included Leo Wolfe James Boyd J M Kelly and others with Washington County Bar members attending as a group.
The Cetien service for Edgar Ocetjen, announced for yesterday afternoon, was postponed to this afternoon. The ceremony today was held in a simple local setting.
Gracehill resident Mrs Cadwell Grady died this morning at age 46 after a week long pneumonia in her Kalona home. Funeral services are set for Wednesday at 2 PM at Kalona Methodist Church with Rev Peterson officiating. Burial will follow in Kalona Cemetery. She was born February 1, 1880s and married Cadwell Grady in 1991. Surviving are her husband two sons Karl and Leslie two brothers Jake and Hubert Avers a sister Mrs Ea Small and two grand children.
A sub zero cold wave follows a weekend snowstorm that dumped up to 15 inches in eastern Iowa. Main roads expected to be clear by night, though many byways remain blocked isolating communities. Weather cooled to near zero in the southeast and 15 below in the northwest. Transport near inoperable. trains and buses largely halted but some rail lines slated to reopen before nightfall.
The storm halted rural mail delivery with late starts and only one town delivery. Many star routes remained behind, while Iowa utilities reported minimal phone outages and long distance lines still functioning. Road crews began clearing highways at 12:30 Saturday, with No. 92 and No. 218 open partially and county roads gradually opening toward Brighton Kalona and Wellman.
Blizzard kept congregations small as several churches canceled or shortened services. Only about 20 attended United Presbyterian Sunday school, while St. Pauls Evangelical Trinity Lutheran and A M E reported no morning worship. At others, few or only morning Sunday schools met. Catholic Masses at St James drew 75 to 100.
Franklin Center Mr Atkinson saw a meadow lark hopping in the snow while a covey of 12 to 15 birds were missing. Roads in the district are blocked and the Rock Island railroad wagon bridge remains closed during repairs. Eureka Paul Bell, a third grade pupil, walked over half a mile and was the only student to attend as teachers started the day with no others present. A half holiday followed. Franklin District A Burlington Trailway bus followed two snow plows into Washington and stayed until highways opened. Snow plows reopened a single paved road for one way traffic. Community men cleared hog houses to feed and water pigs.
Chinese workers assist farmers to reopen blocked roads across the county with priority given to Dublin and Grace Hill routes. The Grace Hill community faced a fatality prompting early clearing this morning as authorities and residents coordinated recovery efforts.
Nine men shoveled snow for a couple of hours to open the five mile road from Washington to the Harley O Loughlin farm this morning.
Reports from Viipuri say twenty Soviet planes dropped five bombs in the city center damaging several houses and setting some afire. In southern Finland air raids caused alarms in Helsinki and heavy casualties and destruction reported in Vaasa and Aala lands as temperatures plunged to 16.6 below zero.
Judge James P. Gaffney of Iowa County, appointed by the supreme court to substitute for Judge Frank Beechly, arrived in Washington just before noon amid storm delays and planned to open the January term of the district court this afternoon.
