Henry E. Willson, 64, a Waterloo truck driver, and Juanita Holden, 17, daughter of W. J. Holden, secured a marriage license. Willson recently divorced from his first wife, who is the elder sister of his bride to be. The previous marriage lasted 22 years, with custody of a daughter awarded to the mother.
Raynie Randolph was sentenced to five years in prison for stealing a church bell from a Bayard church and selling it to a Des Moines junk yard. Robert C. Reilly, state representative and Dubuque Young Democrats president, reported efforts to keep the 1940 Iowa Young Democrats convention in Dubuque but a letter informed Welor W. House that labor trouble would move the convention to Waterloo.
In Des Moines the Davenport division of the Standard Oil Co held a victory dinner at the Hotel Fort Des Moines to launch the annual sales conference for 1940. The event honored 17 agents and drivers for achievements in 1939 with company officials from Chicago and Des Moines in attendance. R F Balty and J A Day led the program as managers.
Everette Runyon, 24, of Lehigh dies at Mercy hospital after being crushed under a tractor. The machine overturned while dragging a stone load when the load caught on an obstruction, pinning Runyon and causing crushed leg and internal injuries.
Hale testifies in Thatcher suit to obtain extra fee of 5000 dollars, denying he agreed to turn over all insurance business to Thatcher, executor of Elizabeth C. Hale's half million estate. Thatcher claims Hale would accept a 3500 dollar executor’s fee in exchange, and asserts Hale breached the agreement.
At the State University of Iowa military ball in Iowa City Tommy Dorsey and his swing band thrilled about 600 couples. ROTC honored Nona Reberg of Mount Pleasant as honorary cadet colonel while Davenport freshman law student Robert C. Christensen was named cadet colonel.
Maurice Handschin, 37, male employee, died after being shot by Mrs. Will'am McPeek, 29, who remains jailed without charge. McPeek told Detective Chief Tom Farley Handschin deserved his fate and would not prosecute. She said they planned Christmas breakup so he could remarry and care for their 11 year old son, but he instead wed another divorced woman with a 7 year old daughter.
Clifford Campbell bought Nate Black's interest in the print shop and with Frank Frazier will move from 12 South Iowa Avenue to the Dougal building on North Town Avenue. Black, in business 53 years, will assist where possible as the move to a fluor escent lit, steam heated space in the Dougal basement is completed.
R. B. McAllister from Des Moines and sanitary engineer R. J. Schliekeman visited dairy farms and pasteurization plants in Washington and Wellman. They reported considerable improvements still needed in methods and equipment at the plants visited.
Funeral services for A. Beiter were conducted yesterday afternoon at L. A. Jones funeral home with Rev. William M. Nichol and Rev. Carl W. Klein officiating. Burial followed in Valley cemetery. pallbearers were Dewey Weeks, Lee Sueppel, Charles Denison, Dell Walker, Paul Lytle and Clarence Brinning.
Ramseyer plans to open a large hatchery and retail complex at the end of East Washington Street. The 26 by 60 foot facility includes a display room office and store with a 65 000 chick capacity and a second floor for batteries and stock. The expansion promises better service and 24 hour operations with enhanced ventilation lighting and heating.

Four persons were killed when a chartered airplane from Detroit crashed in a boggy corn field near Casey Illinois. The craft exploded and burned. Three of the victims were a Detroit family traveling to Phoenix Arizona for their health.
Des Moines reports Raymond Kresensky formerly directing the Iowa WPA Writers Project resigns. George J. Keller says David McLaughlin, ex Clear Lake writer and Kresensky assistant, will become head. Kresensky did not disclose future plans.
General L. Z. Mekhlis, Russia's top political army commissar, is en route to the front to supervise soldiers' morale. He called a meeting of under-commissars from all Finnish fronts after the six week Finnish campaign failure.
Washington January 13 1940. The executive council of the American Federation of Labor and the American Federation of Labor allied Industrial Organization endorse unemployment as the top domestic issue and urge joint action in their 1940 legislative program presented to Congress by John L. Lewis and William Green. They agree on avoiding war while differing on the national labor relations act.
Agents Russell Daniel and J F Chval of the U S Treasury Secret Service arrested Harvey Snelson 38 of Indianapolis on a charge of possessing and passing 30 counterfeit ten dollar bills in five Iowa cities since December 1 He was taken into custody and four more counterfeit ten dollar bills were found hidden inside a necktie at his room
Martha Lohberger of Ventura California left Thursday after a Christmas visit with her parents Mr and Mrs Joe Lohberger. She planned to visit sisters Mrs Laurence Kehoe Mrs Dan Keeler and Mrs Cullen Bacon for a few days then proceed to Chicago to stay until next Thursday before returning to California.
Government brought expert medical testimony to show Norman Baker's cancer hospitals at Eureka Springs and Vilasentine failed to cure cancer. Baker and four associates face mail fraud charges over advertising the treatment as a cure.
Donald Rooks completes a 1150 mile tractor journey from Washington to Grand Junction Colorado in 1 week 3 hours 45 minutes averaging 164 2 7 miles per day at 17 mph. Mrs Rooks drives the return car through Monarch Pass with three feet of snow as they arrive home safely Saturday night at 8 00 p.m.
J. W. Stewart and Floyd Maxwell head to Moline for a three day convention of John Deere representatives beginning tomorrow.

Pneumonia typing rose in January and again this month, while school attendance lagged 6 to 15 percent below normal. Nine Russian aircraft based in Helsinki conducted a raid on the British coast, dropping 40 bombs. Heavy damage reported with a plane shot down and debris and holes in Helsinki harbor ice. Communication with outside areas was disrupted for hours and full details were unavailable.
United Press reports day of air combat with British air raids and coastal anti aircraft fire. The Air Ministry says only one Nazi raid occurred by noon and German craft were shot down. Russians bomb Finnish cities as Finns claim three planes shot down. Property damage noted as heavy.

Augusta Pehler 81 died at 2 10 AM at Washington County Hospital after ten weeks bedridden. Funeral at L A Jones Funeral Home with Dr F W East in charge. burial in Ainsworth Cemetery. Native of Gage Denen Germany born June 24 1868. married Herman Pehler in 1877 and lived in Hartsburg Illinois before moving to Ainsworth then Washington. Survived by three children Emma Wuer John Pehler Anna Pehler. husband died 1921. Also three brothers and four sisters. Presbyterian church member.
